| no partners | | My GPS went dead so didn't track the distance properly, but that's okay, it was in the Sugarloaf Mtn area. I think the past 3 summers I've been out on tortoise surveys with the AZGFD and had a great time. I started thinking I wouldn't hear anything this summer until finally some weeks back I got an e-mail, and Liz was also interested, so I signed us both up for this morning. It required us getting up super early to meet the group, which is against how we believe in handling hikes most of the time, but in the interest of science we were okay with it. I'm okay with starting early occasionally anyway, but in general I want my doctor wife to get plenty of sleep.
With all the steep offtrail terrain it was challenging for us and tested my courage, endurance, and balancing ability, but it was worth it and was awesome. There was some scrambling and bouldering involved. Unlike when I've participated in the past, we didn't spot any tortoises ouselves, but others did and were happy to show us. One guy showed us a gorgeous rattlesnake curled up under a boulder. I feel grateful to the AZGFD people for letting me do this again. It was great for me as I am trying to get my hiking game back on. |
