Headed up the hill early Monday morning to pick up my cousin from Camp Verde then drove east to the Cabin Loop. We were each dying to ditch the heat and had planned a quick, in-and-out overnight hike and had decided to start with the Houston Bros trail and figure it out from there. We parked just north of the Pinchot Cabin and the 95 road was in great condition. There were 2 elk grazing in the Houston Draw on the other side of the road from the TH, the first of many spotted on this hike. The springs were definitely flowing with cool, clear water and I couldn't get enough pictures. All of the descriptions about the beautiful scenery on this trail are true so we didn't rush our pace and took our time exploring both cabins along the way. We stopped for lunch around 2:30 and decided to take an extra long rest as we were eager to test out our new travel hammocks we had purchased. They were the cheap $20 versions and we had each read all the reviews about them splitting down the middle so it was a little tense at first but the hammocks held! After the quick catnap we got started on the trail again and came across a cow elk grazing near the spring with her calf on the hill to our right. We snuck to about 25 yards from them both. We decided to take the Barbershop trail when we came across it because we were looking to set up camp soon and it looked like it would have more springs for us to use for cooking. We were right as Barbershop Spring was flowing nicely. We saw another 2 elk before the spring and another 7 once we got there (that makes 13 for the day). This spot was gorgeous! We filled up enough water for cooking and set up camp shortly thereafter. The night was cool and borderline cold but was much welcome after dealing with the 110 degree heat in Phoenix lately. My cousin and I caught up on life, drank whiskey, and then survived the night in our sketchy hammocks. We did a simple backtrack the next day and made it back to my truck already planning our next trip back to finish the Cabin Loop, but not before we saw one more elk crossing the trail in front of us.

Haven't been hiking in quite some time. Was trying to get in the habit of going once a week, specifically on Sundays but that got derailed as I opted to go to the Flogging Molly concert on St. Patrick's Day which was on a Sunday. Concert was great but it got a little crazy and I ended up losing the orthotic for my left foot which sidelined me for a few weeks while another mold was ordered. Throw in moving and its been over a month since my last hike. I finally found some free time last Monday so I brought my cousin on up to the Spur Cross area to hike Elephant Mountain.
The weather was great that day. It was the last of the cold front before the 90's hit. Nice and breezy with some big gusts once we got to the top. We followed the well-marked trail system to the saddle then headed to the top. The trail got a little hard to follow once we got to the 2nd rock formations and I'm almost sure we got off track a bit because my cousin's GPS said we hiked about a mile more than is listed. He managed to get attacked by just about every cactus along the way while I survived unscathed Hahaha.. The critters were definitely out that day as my pictures show. It was fun to see. The views from the summit were great, however it was a little dusty that day because of the wind. Nice hike.

Having been talking to my friends all week about my hike to Baldy Mountain last Sunday and raving about the views, flora, etc. a few had asked to join me on my next trip citing various reasons: wanting to get back into shape or back into hiking or just that they love my company. I used HAZ to find a peak in the same area that was similar to Baldy and Governors Peak was the choice. I woke up rather fuzzy from the night before and apparently so did my drinking-buddies-turned-hiking-buddies as our party of 4-5 was reduced to 2. We spent the drive to the trailhead calling the 3 deserters to belittle and harass them, and conjectured that their glaring lack of will power was a disappointment to the entire human race.
Sorry for the long intro, nothing but the trail from here on out. The dirt road to the TH was great, easily passable with a car. I even had a Ford Focus riding on my bumper for most of the way. We got a late start on the trail because of the fuzziness stated above and hit the trail a little after 2. The air was cool but the sun was rather warm and you could feel it whenever the breeze died. We saw in the logbook that someone else had been on the trail that day but had already finished so we had the trail to ourselves the entire trip with the exception of the gentlemen shooting in Castle Creek 100 yards from the start of the trail. You get a good sense of solitude and of being in the wilderness on this hike. The desert was very green from the all the precipitation the storm brought on Friday and there was still quite a bit of snow on the Bradshaws. A lot of saguaros and most of the barrel cacti were quite fat and full of water. I enjoyed the views of Lake Pleasant and of the first ravine but I was most excited when we got to the bottom of Four Tanks Canyon and could hear running water. We found an area that had several mini waterfalls (1 to 2 feet) dripping into small pools. It is always thrilling to see running water in the desert! I dipped my bandanna into the clear, cold water and we got ready for the final ascent. We followed the cairns the best we could and they were actually pretty helpful. They at least pointed us in the right direction. But we lost them almost halfway up and made our own path from there. Once reaching the false summit, we looked down and realized that we had taken one of the more difficult paths available so we planned out a much easier path for the way down. We got to the actual summit in no time after that and took in all the scenery. We rested, snacked, and took a bunch of photos in all directions. The way down seemed much easier especially in the shade of the peak with the setting sun. There was some sliding but that was expected. We made it back to my truck just as it was getting dark and sped back to town for some supper.

I really enjoyed this hike. I hadn't been on a hike in quite some time with the exception hunting, but I was eager to get back into some real trail-hiking and this was a good one to get me back in the game so to speak. Now this first Sunday in March was a bit overcast and gloomy but showed no signs of rain so I decided to head out, albeit a little late in the afternoon. I passed one other hiker who was finishing up as I was starting the trail and had the mountain to myself after that. The trail was relatively easy to follow with the exception of a few points where some trail spotting was necessary but hey that's part of the fun. I also enjoyed how the trail snaked back and forth over the ridgeline giving views to all directions. It gets a little steep toward the end but I was rewarded with a cool breeze once it flattened out and I had a nice, leisurely stroll the rest of the way to the summit. Just as I was starting back down, the sun finally peaked through the clouds near the horizon giving me some great sunset shots. I watched the orange blaze of what was left of the sunlight sweep towards me across the land illuminating everything with a neon-like radiance. As the light hit me I turned and watched it overtake Lake Pleasant. Very cool sight! I took a few more pictures before watching the sun sink into the horizon. Then, realizing that I didn't have much light left, I began to hustle the rest of the way down the trail hearing burros call out as I did. I eventually made it to my truck before needing to use a flashlight. Great hike close to home!
