We chose to take the rougher 4x4 trail into Elephant Head (FR 4073). It's do-able by most good stock 4x4 vehicles. My 2002 4Runner made it fine, as did our friend's stock Nissan Frontier. I'd recommend 9.5" of clearance and you should be fine. Low gears not needed. It's mostly a rocky trail, really not too much fun off roading.

The hike was awesome! Good scrambling, incredible views. Not for the fearful of heights. Definitely one of my favorite hikes.
