The Wind Cave Trail is easy enough to take out-of-towners....the best part about it is, take them there if you want to show them the Fountain in Fountain Hills. Sure is a lot more exciting to look at from atop then it is in the park!

If anyone knows of a trail with better hieroglyphs or petroglyphs, please advise cause I'd LOVE to see them! This trail is awesome! I could spend all day at the top!

This is a gorgeous hike that I highly recommend! We took our time hiking from the Canyon Lake Marina and made it to the 3 mile mark at Boulder Canyon. Would have liked to go further on to Indian Paint Mine, but we really underestimated this trail! It's a good intermediate hike, but take lots of water...there is plenty of uphill, rugged terrain. We also ran into some wind shears at the tops that about blew us away! But it was an unusually hot February day (83), so the wind felt good. The wind and heat did beat us up a bit though! Don't forget to stop and turn around often for breathtaking views of Canyon Lake, especially when you get high enough to block out the roads and marina. From the summit (about 1-1/2 miles in), there are good views of Battleship Mountain and Weaver's Needle, but the real treat is the dropoff view into LaBarge Canyon.

Don't overlook this beautiful hike because you might think it's too easy! The rewards at the top will stay with you for a long time! At Garden Valley, you will find a mound of rocks, overgrown with grass and palo verde trees, that is actually a prehistoric stone house. It is said the house was estimated at three stories with a stone-paved court in the center. The entire area can be scoured for broken pottery shards (identified by worn red glaze on one side, black sand colored on the other). Nice to find and sets your imagination on fast track, but leave them there for other hikers to enjoy! Near the foundations of the house, if you look carefully, you will find three metates (grinding holes) in the rock floor. Plan to spend at least an hour in the valley, and enjoy a bit of history!
