Started out with the intention of going all the way to Bridal Veil Falls, only made it as far as the gap. I read the posted description of this hike prior to heading out and it said the first couple of miles were relatively flat. Um, it pretty much an all up hill hike. You don't realize it because other than a few steep areas it pretty gradual until you get to the end. It was more noticeable when hiking back down. (Killed my knee on this one.) Even though we did not make our goal of the falls, the Gap was nice and cool with a very pleasant breeze. There was a nice little waterfall across from the gap coming down Esperero wash that was flowing pretty good. I would like to know more history of the area as on that last leg up there is an over hang to the east that has some rocks that look like the were cut into squares; definitely man made looking. It took us four hours to climb up, but then I do lollygag around and take pictures, and three hours coming down. That is not only due to playing around taking pictures, but my knee was on fire with every step. Oh, and I spent some time taking a few pictures (with a telephoto lens) of a rattler that gave fair warning when I got to close in the Bird Canyon wash.

Trail starts off fairly easily so if you forget to lock your car about a half mile into the hike, its no problem to turn around and go lock up and then resume the hike. ](*,) After passing the Converse trail things start to get a little steeper. The trail is well maintained with "steps" added in place but there are some bare rocks that you have to climb over. Things level off a bit and you pass the Carillo trail, then you start to climb again. Again, the trail is well maintained with the "steps" added in to help. This is a 1.2 mile leg then you meet up with the Three Tank trail. Toward the end of this leg, and probably about .1 mile from the Three Tank trail is a huge bee colony (I attached a picture) on the left hand side of the trail. A log was placed on the trail (and hopefully is still there). There is room to pass around the colony to the right. From here on out it is a fairly easy hike to the Bridal Wreath Falls. To actually get close up to the falls you have to climb over a bunch of fallen rocks, but if water is running it is worth that extra bit. It took us two hours to climb up, but then I was snapping pictures along the way, and an hour and a half to walk back... still taking pictures, but not as many. Had we got an earlier start we might have ventured to Ernie's Falls. Maybe next time.
