The Superstitions have been calling my name ever since I first laid eyes on them when I moved out here 2 1/2 years ago.

On a spur of the monument, I decided to head up to Flat Iron on Thanksgiving. If you are going to attempt this hike pace your self. I started out fast after passing the granite bowl near where the dry waterfall is, it becomes very challenging.

I was amazed at the runners going up it to run the ridge line and all the other hikers out there. I started at 730 from the state park, reached Flat Iron around 12-1230 then got back to my truck around 230.

All I can say is what a hike and what a view, there were a few on the trail. Ran in to a group that offered great encouragement.

It defiantly is a 4 out of 5 on the difficulty, after you pass the granite bowl area get ready to climb up rocks.

Great trail great view glad I finally got off my butt and did it :y:

There were individuals in there 80's and kids as young as 10 climbing it.

Started this hike after 1pm this afternoon, took a bit to find the trail head parking lot from the directions posted in the jacobs trail description.

Overall nice hike, the terrain at the after you make your first turn to head towards the mountain was had a bunch of small rocks. It portrayed a wash more then a trail. Ran into 4 individuals riding there horses, after pleasantries they asked if I had water with me. That was a pleasant surprise that they seemed to be looking out for my welfare. After that I walked for awhile the trail narrowed in certain points, was a little bit concerned being in shorts that I would scrap against a cactus but this didn't occur. When I came up to the next turn I realized my hat that i had placed in my back pocket feel out. I double backed briefly then decided to continue on and I would just search for it on the way back.

I passed a trail runner and besides the runner and the couples on horseback it was just the birds, lizards, bee's and I on the trail. My initial purpose of the hike was to make a push all the way to the end and back down which would of been a little over 12 miles round trip. Realizing I didn't have enough time to make the complete round trip I settled for the intersection of Siphon Draw Trail. When I got to the intersection I took a 5 minute break, during which I had a conversation with a man coming down siphon draw trail who stated he ran up to the top then ran the ridge line for 5 miles then came back down, maybe one of these days when I get back in running shape i'll be able to do that.

I began the trip back which was uneventful, checking route scout numerous times just to confirm I am on the right trail. When I was getting back the the trail head I came across 2 females who appeared to be heading out for a night hike. Maybe when I get more comfortable in the superstitions I will try a night hike.

Unfortunately I didn't find my hate, as I came to the trail head I was hoping someone picked it up on the trail and placed it at the posts at the parking lot. No luck there, if your out on that trail and find a black Oakland Raiders hat please grab it for me, I have had that hat for 5 years and it has been through a lot with me. Took plenty of pics that I will post. Enjoy and happy hiking!

I have been wanting to explore the hiking trails since moving to the valley of the sun. This morning I was debating on Camelback or the Hieroglyphic trail off of the Lost Gold Mine Trail. I wanted to enjoy my day outdoors and escape the crowds so I chose the Hieroglyphic trail. It wasn’t hard to find the trail head parking lot from the 60, thanks to directions from yelp.
It was an easy hike, the only thing I regret is wearing my running shoes. Over the course of the trail you will be walking on a lot of small rocks with some uneven terrain. If you are not careful and watching your step you can easily twist your ankle. It has a slight incline from the parking lot to the actual end of the trail. I wanted to go further up from the water ponds to where the actual spring is at but I didn’t have the proper foot wear to assist me on some of the bolder and rocks. Plus I was also wearing shorts so I wasn’t in the mood to have my legs scrapped up by the bushes. Once you are at the water ponds or pools the trail basically comes to a dead end. It is a little challenging climbing down to the water pools but just take your time and be careful you will be fine.
I stayed for about 10-15mins and then the crowds started showing up, which I don’t mind but the ponds are in a small canyon so it was beginning to get loud and I wanted to enjoy nature not listen to everyone talk. I began my trek back to my car around 10 and came across many people headed up the trail, glad I left early that place sure it going to get crowded. When I got back to the parking lot it went from a handful of cars parked there to being full.
I did this hike to start scouting locations to take my family on hikes and this one would work out good for a family hike. Probably check at the Useray Trail system next or some trail from the lost Dutchman park. Would like to find a trail that goes to the top of Superstition Mountains.
Couple of tips
Take water even though it’s not strenuous hike.
Watch your footing while walking on some parts of the trail.
Bring some snacks with you to enjoy once you reach the end of the trail.
Get there first thing in the morning to beat the crowds.
