The good news is that the January 2025 fire has certainly had an impact on the trail, but the forest has survived and is starting to regreen. There are spots along the way that burned heavily, but they are not large. The fire seemed to have jumped around, burning some areas heavily (mostly the deadfall), and sparing most areas completely. Of particular note are the perfectly round holes several feet deep that are where a stump burned into the ground following the root system. This fire must have been nearly impossible to put out, giant kudos to all the people that fought this.
The trail itself is in good shape. We met some guys from the fish hatchery up the road dumping rainbow trout in Tonto creek right by the parking lot, so plenty of water there. As we proceeded up the trail, Horton creek was perfectly dry. As we proceeded up the trail, we realized that the stream disappears underground a little above the campground. Further upstream, there was plenty of water and waterfalls, with the spring gushing at full blast. It is well worth the effort to get to the springs, they are a refreshing change of pace for an Arizona summer. Wear good boots, the trail runs across a few cobblestone fields. |
