I finally convinced my group of Ingress buddies to come out on a hike with me. There are two ingress portals at the Mt. Lemmon Fire Lookout, which is a nice, short hike that will get your blood pumping.

When we arrived at the trailhead around 10:00am, there were only 2 other cars in the parking lot, a good sign that not many hikers would be on the trail. We headed out on the trail clockwise with ugly weather moving in. It was pretty windy up at the parking lot and a good portion of the hike down. About halfway to the lookout, the trees really helped buffer the wind.

The hike down is pretty easy, with a pretty good drop in elevation. We arrived at the lookout and peeked around a bit, typically the cabin and immediate vicinity is off limits, but our good fortune brought us on a day when there were several employees there. They were very kind to share some history with my teenage daughter and let me sneak down to the cool, secret lookout bench on the side to take pictures.

We shared sandwiches and chatted with the forest fellows, who informed us that there was an active rescue operation beginning there on the mountain. He mentioned there might be a lot of traffic on the road soon, so we took that as a cue to head on out. :)

The hike back got my blood pumping and I didn't really feel the wind much as it was at my back on the way up. Some of my friends took lots of time to get back up, they mentioned that it was a steep walk back. So perhaps allow for lots of time to walk back at a leisurely pace.

Tons of fall colors everywhere. Magnificent!!

Not 100% sure how strong the flow of the spring was, but it is used to supply water to the lookout, so I know it is running still.

The flow from this spring is visible as you walk the trail to/from the lookout.

Almost 2 weeks ago, I decided to go check out Brown Canyon as I have heard it is nice in the fall/winter. We also had an ulterior motive of looking for Ingress portals, as I had heard there was one at the Frierson grave.

We parked at the Brown Canyon Ranch home and decided to walk the trail counterclockwise. Brown Canyon is beautiful, with lots of fall foliage changing. We only encountered one other hiker during our hike and a few mountain bikers. Be on the lookout for people on bikes, just in case they don't see you first. :)

About 1.3 miles in to our little hike, we encountered Mr. Frierson's grave. This is a lovely spot to stop and catch your breath and take a picture of the well preserved grave of one of the canyon's long gone inhabitants.

The trail is bit rocky in spots, but overall in very good shape and well used. The uphill elevation gain seems to level out a bit after you pass the split in the trail to the mining ruins. We stopped here at the foundation of an old cabin and some mining equipment to have a bite to eat and enjoy the solitude.

Unfortunately, we were a bit restricted on time during our visit and had to turn back a short distance after the miner's cabin. I'd like to go back and do the full loop. I highly recommend the hike for those who appreciate less busy places.

Wildflowers were nonexistent on this hike. It had recently frosted for the first time, so not surprised.

I saw no running water in lower Brown Canyon.

There was water in the tank, not really sure how much.

Not 100% sure on how strong the flow was, but the spring was running steadily on our hike. They have it rerouted through some piping as you get closer to the ranch.

The man candy, daughter and I decided to head out to Bear Canyon for two reasons; one to enjoy the fall weather and two, to play Ingress, our other nerdy hobby. The temp was about 55 as we hit the trail at about 7:30 a.m. We took the dirt trail to the east of the parking lot.

Tons of cars in the lot and a lot of people walking towards Bear Canyon, although as we crossed the bridge to turn away from Sabino Dam, we lost many of the people. It was cool and quiet in Bear Canyon. We passed a few hikers on the trail and a few trail runners passed us, but for the most part, the trail was ours this early.

It had recently rained and there was a beautiful trickle of water flowing through the canyon and all the pools were filled up with fresh water. I saw mountain lion tracks when we stopped for a snack.

We hiked 4 miles in and decided to stop at our Ingress portal and have a bite to eat. While sitting there about 50 people passed us on their way to the pools, so we decided to head back as we weren't wanting to sacrifice our solitude to go to the pools.
