Sunday shuffle up and back. I'm sure the paved road adds an extra something to the total mileage but I'm not so A-nal retentive these days. (Except for trash collection; the trail is a pigsty.) Took the Garmin out with the Ram Mounts Magnifier for a test run. The 'flexible' aluminum arm requires more grip strength than I can muster. The magnification works just fine. Construction continues at the trailhead. Gabions will dress up the west wall of luxurious flush toilets! In the interim, there's no way to pee discreetly on this busy track.

Back to 48th Street trailhead for a weekday hike with my sister-in-law. I hope construction comes to a swift conclusion. Every time I see that Bobcat, it's ripping through more desert.

Today I took a little stroll up Pima Canyon at the 48th Street entrance to South Mountain Park Preserve. My knees are still complaining about Utah so this was more a reconnaissance of the construction site than a hike. The macadam is littered with dog bombs. Diehards have beat a path around the temporary fencing which I dutifully followed. I found a lug nut, a blue bicycle tire tool, bottle caps, numerous chubby baggies which I left in place. I filled a similar sleeve with enough broken glass to sell to the Cape May city council. They're looking to replenish sea glass. I'm new at this, feel bad offering such a sketchy triplog. Consider this practice for when I post something of merit.

Continuing my search for the elusive Cosmic Ash Tray, I followed the 4Runner GPS to Escalante, Utah to a trailhead I assumed would lead me there. I discovered the vehicle GPS was unreliable in Grand Staircase, ended toddling off down Harris Wash with a Garmin Oregon 750t. I downloaded a route posted on the internet by Hiking Gal (?) and had a reliable coordinate for the massive pot hole. Getting there from Harris was a trial for low vision, even with the support of two keen-eyed companions. We post-holed through lots of FeMg colored sand. I'm still shaking out of the Altra Lone Peaks, a poor choice of footwear for the terrain. The hematite - Montmorillionite concretions, lusciously oxidized, was the best part of the hike. I know now that I must find a GPS geared for declining eyesight if I want to get where I'm intending to go. Any suggestions?

There was color in Kanab, trees edging toward gold. By Escalante, the leaves were gone. I was content to drink in that Juniper scent I associate with slickrock elevations.

The second attempt to find Cosmic Ashtray started at the intersection of Old Sheffield Road and the alleged trailhead for the pot-hole. Instead of following in the shadow of the 5800' contour, we fell into more post-holing through deep sand and overshot a critical waypoint. This and I was finding chert flakes and hypothesizing where they came from. We were deep into cherts we have known and admired before we took a sight and shot back toward the direction of the formation. We dodged all cryptobiotic soil, hopscotching over slickrock until sunset. This close, but I didn't want to see the Cosmic Astray in starlight. I know when to make my way back to the barn, but I shall return to see the place in sunlight.

Back for more punishment with two friends in tow, we hiked in at roughly 9:00 a.m. I had every intention of photographing this hike but left my phone and wallet at home. We parked in the tiny turn-out on 42nd Place, encountered half a dozen mountain bikers and a few hikers. No dogs on the trail today; they stayed home in the AC. I didn't check the temperature, but it was warmish as per usual. They promise us something cooler next week. Trail markers were intact at all junctures. The area isn't as busy as anticipated for a Sunday. 48th Street fans may be finding a way around the construction fencing or entering off E. San Gabriel Ave and S. 40 Place? I'm carrying extra weight in the Osprey hoping to regain core strength for Winter backpacking. I stayed upright, needed a hand on some of the sketchier downhills.

Cheers

The closure of the 48th Street entrance to South Mountain Park Preserve has me scrambling to find entrances I can safely drive to and park. I've been warned not to park in business lots north and west of the golf course. Apparently, they will tow your vehicle. I've been parking at the tiny turnout on 42nd Place near the fire station with permission of a security guard. Not the most scenic entrance and no facilities. I chose the counterclockwise loop, Javelina to Beverly and out, have done it the opposite direction. I carried a daypack with extra water, nothing too heavy. Not many hikers, a few conscientious dog walkers with wag bags. The trail is marked at intersections, the telegraph line is easy to spot from the ridgeline. (This is a dateless triplog. I'll pay attention to time, weights and breaks in future logs.) This entrance will get you to Mormon, to Fat Man's, to Buena Vista and back, but I can't vouch for secure parking. I've had to replace the drivers side window once this season.

Cheers
