Cardio, cardio, cardio. Steep sunset hike with my buddy, Tom, ironically at Tom's Thumb.

This was my first time at the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, and wow have I been missing out! The rocks were interesting, the trail and TH were pristine along with the views. It was busy but the crowds cleared out by the time the sun was setting.

I free climbed up a little bit of the thumb on the SW side. Truly a harrowing experience down climbing afterwards, but that's the price you pay for the fun of going up.

I brought my brother and two of his friends along and gave them a little tour. It snowed a few days prior, so the red rocks were capped with a coupled inches of snow - enough that we didn't have to worry too much about the prickly pear under foot.

We took a leisurely pace soaking in the views and enjoying the conversations. We didn't go the full distance, so expect a higher mileage than what I listed if you are hiking the Loy Canyon trail.

Do not attempt this route unless you know what you are doing. A couple section on the ridge required climbing with exposure to fatal drops on both sides.

I parked at the Broken Arrow TH at 8:30am. Temperatures were chilly, but not freezing. I began hiking west on Broken Arrow using Twin Buttes Trail to connect with Hog Heaven. I continued on Hog Heaven a little ways then bushwhacked up to the saddle following the ridgeline up West Twin Butte. There's a large cairn marking the summit.

By the time I got to the top, I was slowing down and starting to feel flu symptoms; my symptoms increased over the rest of the hike, and I was sick the whole following week. Anyways, I took a break to dangled my feet off the edge while watching people visit the church below. The views were unobstructed and quite impressive. Bring binoculars, lots of water, and a snack.

I continued on to the village. There's another section of climbing down and then back up with sheer drops on both sides. The village walls had mostly collapsed due to exposure, and it looked like the place had been backfilled at some point. I vaguely recall reading that it was partially excavated post 1950s, but I can't find where I read that. If anyone knows more about the village, please let me know.

I'd like to attempt the more difficult East Butte in the future.

This was my first wilderness hike, and I absolutely loved it. Our group was a foursome with mixed levels of athleticism so we took it slow. Similar to sventre, we bushwhacked at the start of the hike then used the cow paths and drainages which made it easy going. Any sign of human activity (campfires, spent shells) disappeared after the first half mile or so of the hike. We didn’t see any petroglyphs or mines, but at one point we saw what looked like hand and footholds on a rock face. It may have been natural erosion. Regardless, the simple beauty of the desert was more than enough to justify the trip. As the hike description notes, make sure to stay off the private land in Section 34 of the topo. I’ll be back!

I came up from Phoenix to hike this trail in the winter with a friend from Flagstaff. The hike was a blast, but I was feeling the effects of the elevation change. Snowbowl was open, but there was minimal snowpack on the route. The slope before the crash site still had a lot of rocks sticking out and navigating with snowshoes was difficult. We ended up turning back about half way up because I twisted my knee and we had a late 10am start.

It was the first winter hike for both of us, and I'm glad we decided to turn back. Next time, I'll bring fewer layers, better gloves, and try to lighten my pack weight.

I'll be back when there's more snow and get an earlier start! Great hike, but don't underestimate it!
