With the Bighorn fire closing down all of my regular trails here in Tucson, I have been returning to the Huachucas, my former stomping ground. I love the scattered mining debris to be found trailside and off-trail if you go looking. The steep climbs are challenging and the downhills provide a bit of rest before the next uphill. There is usually plenty of water to refill the backpack and in the past, I have frequently scared bears away from the water sources as I was approaching. An added bonus is camping up on Carr Canyon. With the temps getting into the triple digits, the campgrounds provide a cool respite.

The weather has been so amazing with water available everywhere. It is nice to just carry a few liters on such a long hike and refill along the way. I did this hike a week earlier going in a counterclockwise direction, however, the downhill from the top of Cathedral Rock to Sabino is brutal on my old knees and I found coming down Bear Canyon much easier. The views up and down the East and West fork trails are amazing with the Pusch Ridge Wilderness to the right and the Santa Catalina Mountains to your left on the way down. There is also a great campsite on the AZT on the Westfork trail where I had just taken a young coworker out for her first backpacking trip. I think she enjoyed the hike as much as she did my mandatory hot chocolate and peppermint schnapps nightcap.

When I made my first forays onto the HAZ site I saw a lot written about Peralta Canyon and the Superstitions. Little did I know that I used to drive by them back in the day when visiting my niece who used to live in Mesa. A few months back I took off on an overnighter following the Dripping Springs Super Loop, thank you arizonaheat, Amazing! As usual, I was afraid to camp by myself and with a full backpack hoofed the whole thing in one day. My second trip to Peralta Trailhead did not go as planned. I was going to sleep in my car and take off early for a short day hike, Bluff Spring Trail and back, however, at about 2100 some guy came whipping into the parking lot and began cranking music and smoking up a storm. Let's call this gentleman Mr. Tweeker. Being unarmed, I was not going to nicely approach him and ask him to turn the music down. Alternative, pack up my bag, slam doors and hike out at 2215 to set up camp by myself. Thank you Mr. Tweeker for getting me out of my comfort zone.
Surprisingly enough when I drove into the parking lot this Tuesday late after work there was Mr. Tweeker again. Windows rolled down, music blaring. This time I just drove down the road a bit and had a good nights sleep. Day one I hiked about 14 miles into Upper La Barge to camp. Other than enjoying the sounds of water and all of the flowers I have no clue what I spent my time thinking about. Leaving work, family, friends behind my brain just shut off. Wednesday night/ Thursday morning rain woke me up but it was no more than a drizzle. When I awoke everything was dry and the sun was trying to peek out. After sitting by the water, enjoying the gurgling, I thought I needed to get going before the rain really started. The best part of the hike came at the end of Whisky Spring Trail, I think that is where the view really opened up. I could see The Weaver's Needle that I had hiked around and the amazing ridgeline jutting up from Dutchman's Trail. By this time it had been raining about an hour and the thought popped into my head, dang, hope I can get out of the parking lot. I met some equally wet hikers on my way out but they all had smiles. Should have asked if they were from Seattle like me. I made it back out to civilization with only some minor fishtailing in the mud. Already planning my next trip. There is so much written about the Superstitions by hikers who are knowledgeable about the area, I felt free to just ramble a bit about my hike. 26hrs 50 min like no other.

Today was the perfect example of why AZ is a great place to live. Sunshine and perfect temperatures. The views were the only thing we had to work at today. A new hiking acquaintance posed the question of hiking the to the window window from Sabino. Before she knew it I had the day planned. Be careful what you ask for.

Such amazing weather for hiking. Not much of a rock scrambler so did not make it the last 20 ft to sign the register, but then again neither did my hiking partner. Gives me reason to go back and try again. Thought there would be some water up there still but it was pretty dry.

Have lived in Tuscon going on two years now and thought it was time to finally see Seven Falls. The water level was perfect, the top of the crossing stones were free and clear so no wet feet. It was a nice morning hike to start off a lazy day.

HAZ - Event
I have been wanting to do this hike for awhile, simply because it is in so close, but could not find anyone to go with me. I really did not want to sleep out there by myself, but I set a date anyway and went. I love Ventana canyon and developed new respect for it with a full pack on my back. I made it to the window in 5 hours which surprised me. Not far past the Window there is an amazing little area thick with Manzanita and surrounded by amazing rock formations. AZbackpacker called the trail down the backside a bushwack and that it was, that is when I realized I had forgotten my sleeves. It was amazing to hike Cathedral Rock in the dark, hiking in the dark is fun, sleeping alone out there not so much, one of my hangups. One glitch I had here was back tracking about 1/4 mile. If I stop on an incline I like to stand with my feet facing up to stretch. Well I forgot to turn around and it took me a good bit to realize it, heck everything was dark, I had no point of reference I was happy to see coming down towards Romero a fire was blazing and I heard laughter. True trail magic, three nice young guys invited me to stay in their campsite, my prayers were answered. What can I say, the rest of the hike was one incline after another, one great view after another. My future son-in-law texted me he had parked at Marshall Gulch, at first I was miffed because that took out the last incline. It only took about 2 seconds to realize what a dingle-berry I was and decided I was thrilled to cut the hike a bit short. There is still a good bit of water up there, I am from Washington state and still have not gotten used to dry creeks. I met my daughter and her boyfriend as they hiked up trail #3 to meet me and bring me home. The best part was they had a small brick of smoked cheese and a little glass of red wine for me to drink on the trip back to town, who would not want to do this again. Looking forward to hiking other trails up to Mt. Lemmon in the future, if you are interested, keep a look out.
Wish I knew how to edit out all of the times I got off trail.

I saw a post once of a Blackett's Ridge time >5 hrs so I feel comfortable posting my time yesterday to the window. The hike was amazing, even during monsoon season I never saw so much water, it was a total treat to the ears. I took a lady up to the window who was here in Tucson for a hiking vacation, she had made all of her plans through MU and happened to see an old random post of mine. I had never hiked with her so I gave her a time estimate of 7 1/2 to 9 1/2 hours. We took a little longer but there was an amazing reason for that. She made it up like a champ, better than me cause I was really having an off day. Down hill was another story. Because of her history she had some difficulty with her knees and navigating all the rocks was a challenge. This amazing woman, had been heavy all of her life. A few years ago she lost 180lbs and keeps it off hiking, biking and working out. It was such a privilege to lead her in a hike. When we were signing the book on top she wrote she would not have made it without me.That made the long day more than worth it. A side benefit of the long day was we got a bit of a night hike in, thank goodness I had my flashlight. When I turned off airplane mode once back in the parking lot my daughter made it clear Mom was in trouble. She and her boyfriend were out in separate cars looking for me in TH parking lots. Now it is not good enough for me to tell them were I am going, now I have to write it down too. ](*,)
