Met up with 2 childhood friends plus 1 (23 year old son of one) at AJ's Pinnacle Peak & Pima 7am on a beautiful Saturday. Took us approx 1 hour to reach the trailhead. Recent rains washed the road out a little and standing water in washes on 1094 as we drove in. We hiked up the jeep trail to the pond, never could see the trail the cuts off to the left before the pond. Small rock cairn had tumbled and no evidence of a trail. We bushwhacked a little from the pond until we connected with the trail and continued to the gate. I wore my Luna sandals and shorts for this hike and while the sandals worked out fine, I regretted not wearing long pants. Lots of scratches on legs that will heal in time. The trail down is just as rocky as everyone described. I brought hiking poles and used them briefly on the way up, mostly I just had to pay close attention to each step. Once we hit LIme Creek we missed the horse trail on the the other side and just followed the creek until it was very tough going. Thankfully I kept looking off to the right and at some point caught sight of the trail we followed through the gate on on up the creek until we could see the cabin roof in the distance. We saw zero human footprints on the trail or in the wash other than our own. Some deer tracks, javelina poop, coyote poop and a few white tail deer. Also what we believe was a large barn owl flew low right over our heads as we approached the creek.
At the cabin there were bags hanging inside, we figured a couple hunters. We did see an arrow along the trail, so maybe bow hunters. The cabin is in remarkably good shape considering its years, must have been rebuilt in the past 20 years or so. My great uncle ran cattle in this area back in the 40s to maybe early 70s and this structure looked newer.
the spring was beautiful however from recent rains the water still a little less clear.
The leaves changing color made for a most spectacularly beautiful canopy for the hike and very colorful views from the trail heading in. This is a hike I would love to do in every season as it would offer fresh views and photo ops every time. Uncle Ted and I rode horses in the area several times while he was in his 80s until just after he turned 91. I wish we had ridden up Lime Creek. He spoke of it and drove me up to the corrals he used by Horseshoe dam but we never took the horsed up the creek.
Grateful to HAZ for giving me the opportunity to visit this location. Next time I will probably take the creek up from Horseshoe just for variety.
Took some nice pictures along the way and just not sure how to post them here. Would do this hike again...biggest challenge is getting another day pass from wife until our kids get old enough to not drive her nuts while I am gone all day. Ha! |

Autumn Foliage Observation Substantial we were surprised at the beautiful autumn colors just as we started the hike down into Like Creek. |

Walnut Spring |

Dry |
| | Tried to locate source of Walnut spring as it was so close to the parking area. The foliage was so dense around the area the spring should be that there was no way to get close. Machetes were useless. Once would need branch cutters to get in close enough. Recent rains made the whole area damp to it was not easy just to trace the water to the source. | | _____________________
