We were exhausted by that point and ended up camping right near the trail junction, not realizing there was an actual campsite just a short distance away. The next morning, when we hiked up toward Mount Baldy’s summit with just our daypacks, we spotted the real campsite—it had a fire pit and was tucked into the trees, much more sheltered from the wind. Whoops!
The final stretch to the summit took us only about 15 minutes from the saddle, and it was absolutely worth it. The sunrise created a massive mountain shadow across the opposite ridge—such a cool sight. The climb up was definitely brutal, but we were so glad we didn’t have our full packs for the final push.
After coming back down to the saddle, we made breakfast, packed up camp, and started hiking back around 9:00 a.m. We reached the trailhead between 1:00 and 2:00 p.m. The descent along the Super Trail was smooth and easy, mostly downhill, with gorgeous fall colors the entire way.
Only one spring (Bellows Spring) was flowing; Baldy and Sprung Spring were both mostly dry, with Sprung Pring being stagnant—definitely not drinkable.
Overall, an awesome overnight loop! Challenging uphill sections, rewarding views, and perfect cool-weather hiking. Highly recommend doing the summit at sunrise if you can. |
