| partners | | This was a scenic and short off-trail hike to the top of one of the lower knobs on top of Byous Butte. I don't get to the Superstitions very often and was ready for another venture there. Grasshopper wanted to re-visit one of his old haunts and suggested this hike. He established the official route marking it with cairns back in 2009 and has done this hike several times. The last time was in April of 2010. The drive up Hewitt Canyon Rd has some beautiful views so we stopped a couple of times to take photos. The road was dry with a few damp spots despite the recent rains.
The hiking route starts at the location of one of the many Camp Grasshoppers he has established over the years. GH found his old cairn marking the "trailhead" and we were on our way. Surprising that the cairn was still there after 9 years. We soon found that the first part of the route up the bottom of a wash had been overgrown with brush so we found another friendlier route that got us on top of a fairly open ridge reconnecting with the official track where it starts the climb up to the first saddle on the north side of Byous Butte. GH was happy to see that his old cairns marking the route were still visible although some had partially collapsed. So our hike was somewhat delayed while I waited at the top of the first saddle for GH to rebuild some of his cairns.
The one and only real scramble up to the high point of the hike looked a little risky for us two old coots. But after a couple of false starts looking for good hand and foot holds we climbed it with ease. We enjoyed a short lunch on top taking in the excellent views and then made a fairly quick (for us) descent back to the car. |
