A relaxing trip gone bad ends up with a happy ending. Went up to a cabin in the Verde Glen II area near Washington Park trailhead for a few days after Christmas with the family, to relax and disconnect from phones, internet and TV. Shortly after leaving, the weather forecast changed from mostly rain with a little snow Wednesday evening to a full-on, 2-day snowstorm. We quickly found ourselves trapped in 2 feet+ of snow. We temporarily lost water and then electricity, with temps dropping into the teens at times.

The night of the storm and for two days afterward, a couple of friends in a truck with chains tried to get us out, but couldn't make it up the hills first because of the deep snow and unscraped roads, then when the roads were scraped they were too slick for them to make it up the hills, even with the chains! No one was able to get in or out for a few days. After the third day of getting stuck trying to get us, our friends were unstuck by a volunteer from the nearby Whispering Pines Fire Department. They told them about us, and a couple of volunteers decided to come and help get us out! It took a volunteer with deuce and a half from the nearby Beaver Valley Fire Department (with the help of a Whispering Pines Fire Department volunteer) to do the job. They weren't able to get all the way into us, so we hiked out with most of our stuff to get to the vehicle.

While talking with the volunteer in the deuce and a half, he picked up a bag of ours we were taking out and saw our address in Chandler. He told us that a few years ago he lived on the same street we did, just a few houses down. Small world!

Thanks to our two new friends, at the Beaver Valley & Whispering Pines fire departments!!
