| no partners | | Well, maybe this will turn out to be the annual check-up. I hiked Escudilla a year ago, and didn't go back later in summer.
The aspens continue to sprout in the burn areas, along with some small plants, especially the wild gooseberry.
I saw a blue grouse! I got some photos of it, too. I got pretty close to it, and it wasn't too afraid of me.
You "labelers" will love this photoset. I have no idea how to label a lightning shelter, but someone will figure it out!
I saw elk tracks all the way to the fire tower. At the tower area has been added this big contraption that is a lightning shelter (see photos). It's locked up, so presumably was helicoptered in there for the workers when they are up there repairing the fire tower. I think that is what it is for, having heard a rumor they are going to rebuild the tower.
On this hike, I took numerous small side trails to check them out. That is why I added the mileage. I hiked over to the east side of the mountain and saw a very nice view from there.
Salvage logging is going on along the road, as it is all over the Wallow Fire area. I got to see some of the machines in action, picking up the logs and piling them. Since last year a lot of burned timber has been cut along the road, so you needn't fear having a tree fall on you as you are driving.
It's a different story in the wilderness area, of course. Today was windy, and I did feel a bit nervous about walking under so many dead trees.
It was a nice hike but I need new shoes/boots AGAIN. Sigh... |

| | Hulsey Lake is just sad. I hear the Forest Service may try to revive it, but right now it is almost empty. | | _____________________
