Development of Central Avenue area began in 1895 when William J. Murphy planned the Orangewood subdivision. The area bounded by now Northern Ave and Bethany Home Rd, between the 7's was set to be Orangewood Residential Village.


The Murphy Bridle Path begins at Bethany Homes Road and ends 2.6 miles north at the Arizona Canal. It is well-graded, multi use and wide. Ash, olive and other large trees survive by thanks to an irrigation system SRP provides. This recreational path and landmark of has been in use for over 100 years.
