Ought to check it out by nonot ![]() Overview
This is an extremely short connector trail that is an offshoot from Winter Cabin Trail. It cannot be hiked without completing approximately half of the Winter Cabin Trail. History Ott Lake is reportedly 1 of the 3 lakes natural to Arizona. Unfortunately like all of AZ's natural lakes, it doesn't really maintain lake status for the entire year and typically dries out by mid-summer.
Find the intersection sign at Winter Cabin Trail. A hop, skip, and a jump later you are at Ott Lake. It's less than a quarter mile. I would recommend anyone hiking Winter Cabin Trail take this side trip as it doesn't add much time or distance. Ott Lake will collect snowmelt in the spring and if you want to see it in lake status, then a hike in spring will be in order. By the time summer rolls around the lake itself has typically been absorbed into the ground and/or evaporated as there is no water source feeding it. Once the muddiness subsides you usually can find that the basin left behind supports a great deal of wildflowers should you visit in mid-summer or fall. Water Sources Ott Lake in Spring, but Winter Cabin Spring, which you will pass by on your approach hike, is a more reliable water source to rely on for all times of the year. Camping You could camp at or near Ott Lake, but it isn't popular. More people would likely camp near Winter Cabin to be near the spring. Note Ott Lake makes a good turnaround point for a summer hike rather than descending all the way into Sycamore Canyon due to the heat that is collected and radiated by the basalt rock at the bottom. Check out the Official Route and Triplogs. Leave No Trace and +Add a Triplog after your hike to support this local community. One-Way Notice This hike is listed as One-Way. When hiking several trails on a single "hike", log it with a generic name that describes the hike. Then link the trails traveled, check out the example. |
