We are finally back to regular hiking after a long period without. Picked a hike from one of the recents posted on HAZ & decided on something fairly easy since we are both out of hiking shape. Getting out of the valley & up to Flagstaff was a plus in this heat. Rogers lake was full of yellow flowers rather than water, & the view across was pretty. We hiked up Gold Digger Trail & then cut off to a forest road, following the previous hiker’s HAZ route. In the altitude and sun, the road up to Woody Mountain Lookout was somewhat challenging to our current fitness level :(. We climbed the tower and were able to see great views of Humphreys and the surrounding areas including a view of smoke in the distance. Hopefully this was a controlled burn. The hike was closer to 9 miles than 7, and was perfect for our first hike in a long while. The weather was perfect, and the route 60% shaded, but the sunny areas in the altitude were pretty hot. Overall, it was a beautiful day with big pines, a fenced-off Aspen grove and beautiful views. We saw 2 eagles & heard them call to us - most likely this was ‘stay out of here, we are hunting.’ The only other wildlife were a couple of horny toads. Finished off the day with dinner in Flag & a crowded drive back to town.

Gold Digger - Two Spot - Woody LO Loop
Never gave this area west of the 89A turnoff much thought. Which is practically a suburb of Flagstaff. [ SW of Flagstaff Loop Trail :: map ]

Two Spot Trail
After a quick 0.35 miles up hang a left on Gold Digger Trail.

Scenic Lookout
Interesting 300 foot trail exactly 1 mile up Gold Digger. The lookout is scenic and a military grade bench to boot. More thought and $$ invested than remotely expected.

Aspen Grove Ramada
Odd to stumble upon this modern and well built structure. Woody Mountain road is 315 feet away but there isn't a use trail to connect and that road rarely gets used. Bruce pondered some ol' gold digger club being involved.

Woody Lookout - 1.9 mi RT
Worthy little destination once 1.5 miles up Gold Digger. Once again something isn't kosher in Coconino. Nice modern deadbolted outhouse for the lookout is vented for a burrito club. Whereas Kendrick 18 miles NNW has been stinking for a decade. The western two thirds of Kendrick is Kaibab NF, perhaps that explains.

Two Spot Trail
After an easy 2.4 miles down Gold Digger we strolled just over a mile on Two Spot. Roger's Lake was dry. Looks 4-20 feet deep is the limit of this oversized pond. Intense interpretive signs, plaques and displays at the trailhead.

Synopsis
Big pine hikes are fun. A great low key option for someone getting into hiking or interested in a forest hike. The gold diggers certainly left a mark. Someone loves(d) this area and it shows. If you hike for likes this isn't for you.
