Re: delorme inreach

@CannondaleKid
Yeah, @chumley confused me (don't go there...). I read "two satellites are at the same altitude," as to each other, not to the Direct TV satellite as I believe he meant. I thought the Iridium satellites were geostationary but maybe I'm mixing that up with GPS which I know are.

Hmm, I haven't been able to spot the bobcat. Actually, I haven't been able to spot the picture or a link to it. :(

Really, what does altitude have to do with making a satellite's orbit geostationary?

@azbackpackr
Do you mean a Garmin InReach? As far as I know, Spot's don't have two-way communication, though there may be a Sat phone model.

Or just don't use a stove... That worked for me for 132 days on the PCT.

Nice! That was my thoughts exactly though the thought was lost from my dearth of spelling prowess. :?

Because of the dirth of water or because it is two track? Will moving from the road really make much of a difference out there?

Oh pumpkin, why is "dirth," being marked by the spell checker?

I mark most of mine as a workout and I believe that hides them. They do show up if there is a photo set.
Is that the case? I've never marked any as a workout as I saw no reason too. I do hide my daily stuff unless something I think the general community might find interesting occurs.

This might explain why two dealers contact me every few months to see if I want to sell them my 2012 manual V6 with off-road package.
Nah, they just want you to buy a new vehicle.

Re: Mindless weather chit chat

It's really windy today, must be a cold front moving through. As I was climbing the Ridgeline trail in Deem Hills, my hat blew off and went about 20' up the side of the hill! I didn't count the extra aeg retrieving it though. When I was cresting the ridge line, the hat blew off again even though I w...

Re: The 2019!! Cyclical totals discussion thread.

I guess when you hike a long trail, such as the PCT, it's easy to lead the year's totals. Some time soon I'll have to log Washington. That will add another 500 some miles and I don't know how much AEG, maybe 70k? I've half heartedly looked for some GPX files for the three detours around fire closure...

Re: Search and Rescue teams now using drones

Drones were used last year in Grand Canyon searching for the two missing hikers that got washed away crossing Tapeats Creek. I know one body was recovered but never heard if the second was or not. All in all a very sad and tragic event, especially since there was no real reason to cross the creek.

Re: Deer Creek/Thunder River loop

I've done it twice. The first time was November 2014. First day we camped at Upper Tapeats. We took the west side trail along Tapeats Creek to the river. It goes up and down more than the east side, but you don't need to cross Tapeats Creek which can be deadly depending on the flow. My problem that ...

Re: Last minute gear questions:

@gringodevil Hi Russell, I'm Russell. Nice to meet you. I never worried about my food and bears when I hiked the AZT, just smaller critters. When I used a tent, I'd usually hang my food just to keep the mice away. When I used a tarp or cowboy camped, I just put my food bag by my head. YMMV. Maybe a...

Re: AzTrail Passages 16-17

I guess I'm not sure what good a water cache at FR4 is going to be if you're only doing 16 & 17 and heading north. By that time, you'll only have a few miles left to get to Picket Post.

Re: I LOVE MY REI DIVIDEND!

Am I the only one that waits until July or whenever it is to get a dividend check mailed to me? Using your dividend at the store is not a dividendable purchase so I never want to do that. There isn't a whole lot at REI that I want or need anymore either, but that's beside the point.
