Re: BCT - Black Canyon Trail

@rcorfman Thank you! How is camping, is it pretty easy to find dispersed spots? Also, think I'm pushing it for Mid April? And your saying take the west side of little pan loop? You can usually camp wherever. I've never had a problem, except one time when I camped near the Table Mesa TH. I couldn't ...

Re: Water on southern portion of black canyon trail?

I know this is four years late, but I've always found water there. It may not be flowing above ground, but there is usually a large pool of water.

Re: BCT - Black Canyon Trail

I've always started a southbound hike of the BCT off of Orme Rd. I know there is some trail north of there now, but I've never walked it. There should be water at Russian Well (5-6 miles south of Orme Rd), then at General Springs. They are about 23 miles apart, so that's a long carry. There is also ...

Re: Trekking poles can be like crutches?

When I hiked the PCT, I forgot my poles, so I hiked the first 700 miles without them. My wife sent them to me with my bear can and some other gear when I entered the Sierra Nevada. I didn't miss them. In the Sierra, they were nice to have on the steep climbs and creek crossings. I also used one like...

Re: Can I drive past Sears Kay Ranch?

I believe the gate to 1058 from Horseshoe Dam Road is locked. I do know that people park there and ride dirt bikes on it as I believe there are some OHV trails. I've parked there before and walked the road for a ways, then split off to climb Kentuck Mountain.

Re: A trick for cleaning your down sleeping bag

@rcorfman Umm... how to ask this politely: Doesn't your quilt stink after a while? That's why I mentioned here in the west. I assume that would be a bigger problem in humid climates like in the east where one may be sweating at night. My quilt wasn't fresh after the PCT, but it didn't smell bad eit...

Re: A trick for cleaning your down sleeping bag

Well, I have one totally empty baffle. It must have always been this way (no where else for the down to go on this bag). Fortuantely it's on the bottom side, which is crushed anyway when you're sleeping on it. I'd be surprised if it was always that way. There are usually breaks in the baffles to mo...

Re: A trick for cleaning your down sleeping bag

I washed my quilt once sometime after I hiked the PCT with it (and several other trails too). I don't know if it made much of a difference. I slept in the same clothes I hiked in. My legs were most always filthy, I'd play whack-a-mole with my socks to get the dirt off before bed. If I needed more el...

@azbackpackr
That's nice. Here's hoping the baffles in mine start bursting soon. Ha. I got mine in 2015 and have used it for hundreds of nights and have had three minor leaks I've needed to patch.

Re: SR 88 - Apache Trail

Frankly, why ANYONE rides a bike along that road, or Bush Highway near Saguaro Lake I cannot fathom, as they are definitely placing their life in the hands of drivers. Back when I raced, that was one of my favorite rides. We'd start in Tempe and go to the end of the pavement past Tortilla Flat and ...

In the end, buying footwear that fits well is a multi-variable (highly personal) thing.
Not to be pedantic, but she's a physio-therapist, not a podiatrist.
