Re: FR 4 Road Conditions

Is this the road the leads out from behind the fire station and intersects the AZT? If so we mountain biked it recently. We opted to not take my friends lifted Jeep Wrangler which was a good choice. The road has been washed out in sections and would probably only be passable in a highly modified 4x4...

Honestly I don't know for sure, but it was just the way we went because we spent the night in Kanab.

Re: Deer Creek/Thunder River loop

@johnsonfam77 We came in from Kanab two week back and the roads were in great condition. A huge portion of 22 is paved and makes for fast travel. Once on the dirt the road was still pretty smooth with the occasional pothole. We took a 2014 Forester, but with a lower clearance car it could be done i...

Re: Deer Creek/Thunder River loop

Just an FYI we were down there to do the loop counter clockwise last weekend and had our food destroyed at Upper Tapeats Campground. The food was in a Outsack Spectrum tied to a dry bag of dishes. It was laying against a rock on the ground while we went and did a hike for 1.5 hours. The first person...

Re: Last minute gear questions:

@gringodevil Because we are only doing a few sections at a time we often are just carrying the water we need if the AZT app water reports don't provide enough. The reports on the app are updated very often right now because of all the Northbounders on the trail. In most areas we have found cell cov...

Re: Last minute gear questions:

I have been aggressively section hiking it this year to finish it by May. - Bring a rain jacket for sure. -A warmer bag is always advised as the weather at the high elevations can get pretty chilly with the winds. We have had multiple nights in the high 20's at elevation this year. -We always use a ...

Re: Maricopa Trail Info

@rcorfman Yes the MT is closed through the Eastern section of Trees Rios due to eagle nesting. The western end is open. They mentioned nothing about the permit once they saw we were rolling through. I wanted to ride the Estrella but one of my companions didn't have the right bike for it. North of I...

Re: Maricopa Trail Info

@rcorfman Well are attempt went....as expected. Starting from the San Juan Lookout we followed the trail towards the Estrellas. The City of Phoenix Water Services kicked us out of the "recently closed" portion of trail between 83rd ave and 87th ave. I notified Marciopa County about this to ensure t...

Gateway Trailhead Parking

Does anyone know of any good location for overnight parking near the Gateway Trailhead in the McDowells? I spoke with the conservatory and they said overnight parking is not allowed at the trailhead. I was considering the CVS but if anyone has a better option I would love to hear it.

Re: Maricopa Trail Info

@rcorfman Hmm. We probably came across the same info. I smashed together most the route from Bartlett Lake road South with one missing section between the road and Browns Ranch. It sounds like this portion is ridden occasionally so it shouldn't be an issue. The path North of the road is rated as a ...

Maricopa Trail Info

I am planning a bikepacking trip along the Maricopa Trail and am seeking information regarding the trail/route from Bronco Trailhead connecting to the Dove Valley Trail. According to the Maricopa website the portion is listed as complete but I am having trouble determining the route via Sat images a...

Also DO NOT leave anything valuable in the car. I am a Steward for the parks and there are often cars broken into at that trailhead. Mind you I still park my car there often, but just be aware.

Re: Bought a new pack, Deuter ACT Lite 60+10 SL

I love my Deuter ACT Zero 50+15. Bare bones on the features department, but carries weight well and had an amazing price point for the quality. I also own the Deuter Trans Alpine Pro 28 as my day pack and bikepacking pack and can't say enough good things about both of them. Definitely a brand worth ...

Go there, and ask a ranger when you get your backpacking permit. That's the best I can suggest.
