Re: Should Hikers Pay for Their Own Rescues? New Legislation In Hawaii Argues Yes.
@Jim_H We were 24 hours overdue for exiting Aravaipa due to flood waters. We were packed and moving towards W entrance with one water crossing done. We saw the DPS copter buzz the canyon, simply expected a well check fly-by but suddenly a DPS officer walked up to us and said we are evacuating you. ...

Re: Should Hikers Pay for Their Own Rescues? New Legislation In Hawaii Argues Yes.
Key word "closed" trail. Implies area, weather, etc is unsafe. Ignoring the notice is the persons choice and direct violation of the authority closing the trail. I have been a recipient of a free helicopter ride. In AZ if you refuse a rescue, DPS has authority to arrest you and complete th...

Burned and scalded myself on my old mess kit many times, so yes triple the weight of those stoves with shields. ;)Nighthiker wrote:Never had a problem with my US military 1944 mess kit.

Re: Best Practice regarding wet shoes/socks after stream crossing?
Many personal preferences on this subject. True wool socks and GoreTex is the best. Water may enter GoreTex boots over the top but squeezes out as you hike. If the hike has a single crossing early in the hike, I may remove shoes/socks. Depends on the stream bed. Flat grippy stone - shed the shoes/so...

I would not recommend within Hell Hole Canyon (Deer Creek). There are few to none, safe escape areas should floods occur. Sheer cliffs of a hundred feet.morg wrote:within Hell Hole Canyon

By desert standards .5" is significant. Do not recall the inch forecast for our trip noted above but think it was in the .1 to .2 range. You know the canyon and have seen the past devastation of high flows.SJFL wrote:I'm looking at .5" per day,

Yeah, but have you ever been on a free helicopter ride!? Yes, as a matter of fact, out of Aravaipa. Forecast was for a couple hours light rain in March 2010. A pair of storms met and put heavy rain fall on the watershed into Aravaipa the last night of our 3 day trip. Normal flow is 20-40 cubic feet...

Would be an interesting statistic if the figures of rescues were compared per sq mile of the park. GC is the largest park in the list of 10 for rescues.

my list is bees and rabid animals. Agreed. The bees chase and bring their army. My worst encounter has been in town and ran to my vehicle, where about a dozen joined me inside. Best ninja moves and screaming brought me to the winning side with minimal damage (to me). Made me think what would I have...

Would anyone here feel differently if there were 2,000 people hiking your favorite trail, each with a pack of matches, striking them and tossing them every 10 feet, at 10pm tonight? Would you want some action from the legal authority? And need the National Guard to control them? The Governor just pu...

@ddgrunning Hell Hole, Bogger and Horse Camp canyons are our favorites. As Outdoor_Lover says Hell Hole deserves the most time. I have only come from the West but we always camped at Bogger, the mid-point of Aravaipa Canyon. The East end has the most interest in my opinion. Bogger and Horse Camp ea...
