Getting stuck in the Wonder Rift ...
I was reading Joe's description of Hidden Valley - South Mountain ([ description ]) wherein the Wonder Rift is mentioned. In the description, Joe talks about being above the rift, but how do I get down to it so I can get stuck there? Did I miss that part?

Re: Mt Humphreys Trail
azbackpackr, thank you for your reply! Yes, I'm talking about [ gps route ] . azbackpackr describes the "trail" as "wide, overused, [and ]crowded"--is this confirmation that there is an actual trail of sorts that can be found if not ant-ing on up? I'm looking at Nightstalker's ph...

Re: Mt Humphreys Trail
Does the official GPS track/route document an actual trail or is it just cairns or only just a virtual trail based on the GPS track/route?

Hiking vs. Backpacking
Another embarrassing question. Generally and simply (if that's possible), is "backpacking" "hiking" with a backpack such that the trip includes at least one full sleep period? I include the "at least one full sleep period" criterion since sometimes I hike with a backpac...

What is a "shuttle hike"?
Sorry for this basic question.
Is a "shuttle hike" a hike from one place to another (not a loop-type hike that takes you back to the beginning)?
Is there more to it than that?
Is there a glossary somewhere?

Hmmm. It said I was from San Francisco, Sacramento, or Santa Rosa. It is true that I'm from California, but from the Los Angeles suburbs.

Fossil Creek water potable?
Some friends and I are going to do Fossil Creek in a couple of weeks. He says when he and his family did it about four years ago, they drank water from the creek and were OK. However a page on the Coconino National Forest web site http://www.fs.usda.gov/wps/portal/fsinternet/!ut/p/c5/04_SB8K8xLLM9MS...

Re: Boiling water in a plastic bottle!
I remember boiling water in a paper bag when I was in middle school. The reason you're able to boil water in a plastic bottle/plastic bag/paper bag is because the container conveys the heat from the flame to the water and the container stays at 212°F/100°C (the boiling point of water) which is less ...

Camelback Echo Canyon Redevelopment Updates?
Does anyone has more information than is available on the official web site.
How's the project going (as of when you post)? Have you seen progress?
Any more specific info on reopening (as compared to the official "late fall" estimate)?
Thank you for any info!

Re: AZ Republic Article on White Tanks Fatality
I'm struck by the final sentence of the story, "They still had three bottles of water." In my mind, this speaks to the survivors' lack of correct action. According to the story, if they literally had "three bottles of water," it's likely that they had two to three liters of water...

Thanks, SgtLumpy!
I'd seen that a few times on the various trails, but was too burnt at those times to think much about it.
Very informative!

Signature Tucson Hike ...
In Phoenix, among many worthy candidates, I'd consider Camelback (Echo Canyon or Cholla) and Piestewa Peak to be Phoenix's "signature" hikes--well known, (usually) easily accessible, not too long, somewhat challenging. Is there such a hike or hikes in Tucson proper (or very close in)? I ha...

@joe bartels I'm sorry, Joe, but I don't understand what you mean by ie: pano shots and the rest are not or such Edited: It looks like IMG_2596 wasn't done by AutoStitch. That must mean it was done with the iPhone's "panorama" function, but it looks too good--usually for me there's missin...
