Re: What's the best GPS?

@Jim_H
Look up the garmin fortrex 401 or 601 (not 701 though). Under $200. I could sell you a fenix 3 real cheap, but it's the wort iteration of the fenix family in my opinion. Fortrex is a pretty basic line. No maps or colors, just waypoints, tracks, compass and altimeter.

Re: What's the best GPS?

@Jim_H If you haven't already bought something and you're interested in trying a wearable, I would lend you my fenix 3 to try out for a bit. I wouldn't recommend it as a final solution, but I could suggest a few options if a wearable were to work out for you (ranging from ~$150 - $350). @ShatteredA...

Re: Mindless chit chat

@rwstorm That was some thunder last night. The windows here rattled quite a few times. It was certainly more impressive than my 0.56" of rain, but that rain has me at 12.98" for the year. That's what I finished last year with. These last 3 years have got to be the wettest drought on record. :-k

Re: Mindless chit chat

@DmN I considered buying some olive, but at $4 to $5 per lb x 1-1/2 to 2 lb per hour x as many as 8 hours = more $ in wood than in meat. Mimosa is supposed to be good too. I'm 1/3 mesquite for the heat and 2/3 pecan because it has an amazing flavor and is free to me. Being that I've lived here most...

Re: Mindless chit chat

@DmN Just a thought; If I weren't 200 miles away, I would come out , cut that up, and haul it away for free. Look at the cost to purchase that wood for use in a smoker. You might consider an add on Craig's List targeting grill-heads. We do this very thing when we heavy-prune our pecan trees, saving...

Re: Mindless chit chat

@hikerdw
Agreed. With me, it's tomatoes & carrots. We grew our own veggies when I was a kid and those really stand out as irreplaceable. In that I just don't care for anything sweet, I guess I'm just not too picky about most fruit.

Re: Mindless chit chat

@Jim_H
The problem with that is the birds will eat half of them. And I don't mean every other one of them, I mean one half of each fruit. I just buy my fruit a Fry's and get the gas points. A lot of problems solved in one convenient stop.

Re: Mindless chit chat

@Jim_H They flood orchards, which then sit under water for a week, and that's intentional. Don't assume that because there's no water on the surface that there's none below it. the roots sit it water a lot more than you realize (in a normal situation). An 8 or 10 hour soak can take a week or more t...

@Jim_H
They'll be fine if it doesn't rain for 40 days and 40 nights. They actually do better when deep soaked then dried off.

Oh, and I'm now 0.54" away from my yearly rain, with another storm in the hopper.

Re: Mindless chit chat

Even considering the poor monsoon this year, I'm now within 7/10" of my yearly rain. December usually yields slightly over 1" down here as well. I think it's going to be a decent year despite the local news channels screaming drought.

I'm sitting here, watching a stable barometer for entertainment, while waiting for some rain to hike in. NWS promised me rain this a.m. Why can't the government seem to deliver on anything?

Re: Bobcat Attack at Mt Graham Campground

@hiking_arizona I'm wondering why all 15 people had to be treated? It's not like the flu. It's generally transmitted through the bloodstream as I understand it, so unless everyone was bitten, clawed, had open wounds, or perhaps chewing on the bobcat, then treatment would be unnecessary (again, from...
