Re: Tucson area backpacking overnight shake-down suggestions

@SpiderLegs
@andrewp
That's right, the road does get a tad rough after Apache Spring, so not so good without a x-over or truck.

Re: Tucson area backpacking overnight shake-down suggestions

@azbackpackr @andrewp Clear As Mud!!! Setting aside the political merry-go-round, a dozen or more SOBO, AZTers have marked their passage through the Catalinas over this month, and no, not on the bypass. I've seen water and trail condition reports from Oracle Ridge, to WOR, to Hutch's Pool to Sycamo...

Re: Tucson area backpacking overnight shake-down suggestions

@andrewp If midweek is an option, then up around Summer Haven might be your best bet, but with a longer drive time. Marshall Gulch would be a good starting point, and with a short hike into the Wilderness Of Rocks area you'll come upon a an acceptable campsite (there are many). It could well be bus...

Re: Tucson area backpacking overnight shake-down suggestions

@andrewp Day of week will be an important piece of info. Tue - Thu would certainly broaden your options, while Costco would offer more solitude Sat & Sun than any of the packing trails around here right now. My pick would be Cave Canyon via Gardner Canyon Road. https://hikearizona.com/map.php?QX=96...

@AZClaimjumper I just bought one of these https://smile.amazon.com/OCOOPA-Rechargeable-10000mAh-Handwarmer-Motorcycling/dp/B08D3PWNDP?tag=hikearizona I was really just looking for a power brick, but decided to give this thing a try. Shockingly, it works incredibly well, probably 4x hot-hands just o...

Re: Headlamp Alternative - Waist Lamp ?

@LindaAnn Yes, I saw such a beast, but it was truly "a different beast" and reviews seemed to be split as to it's bounce and comfort, and it may have been an earlier model that had overheating issues over long hauls. I'll go back and look, but yeah they are pricey, so I figured I'll dig a little fu...

Re: Headlamp Alternative - Waist Lamp ?

@LindaAnn Good deal. I was wondering about which setting would be best, I noticed it went from 400 to 800 - a pretty big jump. Would you think 400 is about ideal or a ;little dim? I have a 400 - 600 lm puck light that I was trying to judge by, probably not a very good comparison, but I thought 600 ...

Conflicting info It's what they do best. Anywho, that area is closed at least through the rest of this month with the exception of a few miles here and there. Being the SC FS is in charge, I would bet that's more like a get to work date, followed by winter shutdown on Dec 1. They don't like to rush...

Zip loc freezer bags I've had great luck with these as well, but after trying other brands, I stick strictly to Zip loc & Freezer . If you plan to do a lot, a $50 vacuum sealers, and rolls of 4, 6, 8 or 12" width vac plastic sleeve works well. This is some tough plastic that handles boiling water v...

Re: Headlamp Alternative - Waist Lamp ?

Several years back, I bought some crappy, Eveready headlamp merely because it was available at 05:00. It comes off of the headband and fits on smaller pack straps or hip belt. It worked well, so I bought a couple more and sometimes use two focused in different directions and using different settings...

Re: Bighorn Fire

@LindaAnn
So bummed about my mountain. It has been the thing that's most anchored me to Tucson. The Rincons and the Ritas are fine too, but have serious limitations. The Catalinas were the perfect fit for me and I miss the hell out of them already.
