If I am backpacking the AZT #16 - are the tree's sturdy enough for Hammock Camping? Weather so far is looking nice enough, I'd love to just take my hammock. I plan to camp 7-10 miles in.

Re: Reavis Ranch Alternative?
Doing out and back chunk of AZT segment 16 seems the best solution. This looks intriguing. If we are doing well we could perhaps go all the way to Walnut canyon. If they are struggling we could stop sooner. Looks like the downside is that we are exposed along the trail most of the way, and perhaps ...

Re: Reavis Ranch Alternative?
Thank you for the thoughts. The Wilderness restriction is what is eliminating some of the Mazzy and Supe hikes. For Haunted Canyon I was getting a little leary of the portion in the guide which indicated that you had to scale cliffy areas or wade through the water. Based upon the feedback so far, I ...

Reavis Ranch Alternative?
I was planning on taking a group of 15 boys backpacking to Reavis Ranch on March 4/5th - only to find out that the trailhead isn't accessible currently. I was looking for a similar profile hike to replace it. Ideally between 15-20 miles round trip (out/back, loop, lasso OK), ~2hr drive or less from ...

Thanks, I didn't catch that secondary closure in looking at the notices. Looks like I will want to find another hike.

Ideally yes. Will have a number of young men with me, with varying skill levels. Ideally was looking for spots that we could camp, that would also be accessible by vehicle for some additional support of the trek. If it was just me and some buddies, I wouldn't have the concern.

Re: SR 88 - Apache Trail
I was wanting to go hike the Reavis Ranch trail. I hate the road coming from the south (Rogers Trough), but just noticed the 88 is closed from canyon to apachy lake. Google says we can go around via Roosevelt or up through Globe and drop in via the 88. How is that part of the road? Is it accessible ...

Re: Road Access to Trailheads along Mogollon Rim
So I went up today, to look at each of the locations. Each of them were accessible by car today (and didn't seem like they had the locked gates for which I feared). Thanks @nonot for the closure notice. The areas are well posted about no camping within 200 feet of the water as well. Was hoping to ca...

Re: Road Access to Trailheads along Mogollon Rim
@Grasshopper That's part of what I want to assess, are these legal trailheads to camp? If so what is water like, or would we need support vehicles to bring water? Is there a decent place +/- 1 mile from the trailhead to camp? I'll be taking a group of young men between 12 and 18 years old, but some...

Road Access to Trailheads along Mogollon Rim
I am planning a 5 day/50 Mile backpack trip this summer across the Highline Trail. I have been to many of these areas within the last few years, but wanted to finalize our camping spots, access to water, etc. and was hoping to use tomorrow to do so. However I know that at times during the winter cer...

Rattlers in the Supes
How active are the rattle snakes so far in the superstitions? I was hoping to take my kids (younguns) backpacking next weekend, but the drop in temperature has me wanting to stay away from the Rim.
Typically come Mid-March I avoid the supes, as an abundance of caution.

Thank you. I looked on east/west baldy and didn't find a triplog. This helps.

West Baldy Trail #94, AZ :: Snow/Ice Condition
Two years ago I backpacked up west baldy and down east baldy during the second week of June with a troop of boy scouts. No issues with traversing snow. This winter seems to have dropped more snow than years past. Anybody have any insight as to how much snow/ice is still atop baldy this year? I am pl...

Re: Humphrey's Summit Trail
We tried today...took a Boy Scout Troop and we made it about halfway. Too much snow, and too many slips/falls. Still plenty of snow/ice on the trail. Many other hikers also turned around at various points. A few pressed on, but we never made it above the tree line. We did have a nice snow ball fight...

Humphrey's Summit Trail
Hello All- I have been watching the triplogs religiously for updates to the Humphreys Summit, trying to sense if it has cleared upon in the last few weeks, since the trip posted 4.25. I am tentatively planning on hiking the trail Saturday, May 20th but curious if I should reschedule for a few weeks ...

Interactive Map showing Superstition Trails
In the past I have been able to get to a page that showed all of the superstition trails on a map and you could mouse over different trails and it would then take you to that description. I have not been able to find that page again. Is this still part of Hike Arizona?

Hello All - We are doing a 50 miler for our scout camp in the Big Lake/Greer/Baldy Area and we plan to hike up East Baldy and Down West Baldy. I went with my 8 year old to mark areas we planned to camp, and we made it about 3 miles up the trail and then backpacked for the night. We ran into one grou...

Re: GPS Question
Thanks for the link to the other posting.
I am using a Garmin Etrex Vista C. I will try the upload/compare. If I know the error, then real time I can adequately measure mile 5, 10, real time rather than after the fact.

GPS Question
I have tried tracking my hikes but I tend to get a further distance than the noted trail. For example I may hike a well known path, and my GPS will say I hiked 6 miles, but the posted official routes may say only 5 miles. My hypothesis is that this may be do to holding the GPS (want it to have an op...
