Re: Horton / Tonto creek cattle drive?

Yep, me too! After Tonto Creek (going west) there are a couple of ranches that the trail goes through. Maybe the cows are hiking? ;-)

Re: Dude Creek to horton springs - How to find trail

Sajor, Check out my trip report. I just completed TH260 to Washington Park. I have water reports as a part of it (at least I think is there...still learning how to navigate this board!). https://hikearizona.com/gps=34207 Be sure to bring a GPS, the trail is not in great shape in that middle section....

Re: Where to find out about Elk Hunts near Highline Trail?

Hi everyone I went ahead and did the hike last week. I've uploaded my trip report and my route via routescout. https://hikearizona.com/gps=34207 Hardly heard a single gunshot. I did see some hunters as I was leaving the trail at Washington Park. I did see a lot of trantulas. Very cool! I didn't make...

Re: Where to find out about Elk Hunts near Highline Trail?

Apologies for starting a, er, discussion. The timing for hiking that part of the Highline is set by factors other than my choice. If it works out, I can hike there that weekend if not, then there are no other options for me on that weekend. It's just family, friends, and planning. I am totally aware...

Re: Where to find out about Elk Hunts near Highline Trail?

Wow, thanks everyone! I'm planning for the 27-28-29, so no elk but 700 - 1200+ deer permits. 0.0 That's a LOT of hunters out there. So, what's the real danger? Do I hold off? I don't relish being taken for a deer, even with a bright orange pack and a chrome dome hiking umbrella. LOL. I'm pretty care...

Where to find out about Elk Hunts near Highline Trail?

Hi all I'm getting ready to finish up my Highline trail hike. I did about 1/2 last spring and now have a weekend opening up and would like to do the rest. I know we are in elk hunting season now (at least I think we are). Where do I find out if there is going to be a big hunt around the Highline on ...

Re: Info on the Highline Trail

Thanks @Nonot. I'll keep that in mind. I'm not looking to bake and want to be sure that even if I end up going very slowly, I will have water sources.

Re: Info on the Highline Trail

Thanks SuperstitionGuy. I think I will keep a close eye on the weather as the week goes on. I don't really want to be hiking in triple digits in an exposed area, OTOH, I chose this hike because it looks like its bale-able if things are not what I want. Looking forward to it! I have a friend with a c...

Re: Info on the Highline Trail

Argh, life happens and my trip has been delayed. I'm thinking now that I can do this the week of May 23, but that's a full month after I had planned. Any heat or water issues that I need to be aware of? Are the water sources pretty stable? I'm thinking I will do 12-15 miles a day and may shave off a...

Re: Info on the Highline Trail

LOL. Not familiar with "that" brewery, but I was thinking of running it west to east. It looks like there are bigger climbs and a greater overall altitude increase in the easterly direction. Oh and thanks for the link! It was your trip that got me thinking that this would be the trail to d...

Info on the Highline Trail

I'm looking for a good shakeout hike in preparation for an extended section hike on the PCT this summer. Last fall I spent some time at a friend's cabin north of Payson along the Highline trail. It looks nearly perfect for a good shakedown hike. I'd take a pretty leisurely pace of around 15 miles a ...
