Re: Atmosphere Comparison

NWS is forecasting a 100% chance of less than .10 inches of rain in Phoenix this afternoon. A significant chance for insignificant moisture.

Re: For those Subaru lovers

My first car was a 1980 Subaru GL coupe, purchased in 1985. I've had six other Subarus since. Might be an eighth in my future with the introduction of the Forester Wilderness, with 3,000 lb tow rating :y:

Re: Route Scout - Map Rotation

@chumley I wonder if it could have something to do with how we first learn principles of navigation? Or maybe whether we first learned navigation using paper maps or GPS? In my experience, I first learned to read paper maps for the purpose of auto travel. When later I learned about using topo maps ...

Re: "Whistler's Way" Book

@PhxRiles I haven't but I will now! I did recently read another PCT-related book called Crunch , by Daniel Winsor. It chronicles the Sierra portion of his late-Spring 2017 thru-hike when the route was still buried under several feet of snow and encumbered by torrential creek crossings and the threa...

If I manage to sit on a toilet without noticing there's a bear in it, I probably deserve whatever happens next.

Re: Hiking with poor vision

@ALMAL It's been some time since I've felt comfortable hiking without glasses. Everything's pretty distorted, especially the area around my feet. When my vision first started changing (about 8 years ago) I could get away with it. Not anymore.

Re: Hiking with poor vision

Thank you @Pivo for the different perspective. When I first got Rx lenses, I heard from many people about their experiences with progressives (as opposed to straight-line bifocals). The general consensus was that they took some getting used to but didn't otherwise present any ongoing issues. I think...

Re: Hiking with poor vision

@LindaAnn Not dumb at all. I never hike anymore without at least one. Never used to in my younger years. I feel like I'm pretty good about staying hydrated but admit I've never consumed anywhere near the daily amount of water the experts say we should be. Then again, when hiking with others, I'll o...

Re: Hiking with poor vision

@SpiderLegs Yeah, I trip along the trail quite a bit too, although I had always attributed that to the distortion of the Rx lenses. Interesting to hear your insight. I also wondered if it might be my brain not compensating for the difference of walking in thicker-soled boots versus street shoes. La...

Re: Hiking with poor vision

Could it be BPPV (vertigo)? Hmmm, good question. I did have one nasty episode of BPPV six or seven years ago. Took me an ER visit and three days to get to where I could walk unassisted again. Never experienced another one. Maybe I've been living with a less debilitating version of it? It only seems...

Re: Hiking with poor vision

I'd look into diet first That's something I've tinkered with; like maybe I wasn't getting enough protein or energy foods on board before hitting the trail. No food allergies that I know of. I've also recently begun focusing on stepping up my cardio and core strength in the event this might be a fit...

Re: Hiking with poor vision

Maybe try getting a pair of non progressives just for hiking? Yeah, that's where I'm feeling like this is headed. I was hoping to avoid carrying two different pairs of glasses. If it is in fact the Rx that's causing my wobbliness, I'm not sure I'd bother with a dedicated hiking pair since I'm gonna...

Hiking with poor vision

I wear progressive Rx sunglasses while hiking and I've come to wonder if they are responsible for my experiences with poor equilibrium (especially with a backpack), mild headaches, fatigue, etc. I think it has something to do with the constant looking at my feet and then back up. Does anyone else ha...

Re: Tent pole repair

I brought my Half Dome poles to REI and one of the reps showed me how to replace the cord (while selecting a slightly larger gauge of cord that ended up being less than optimal). Even after watching a YT video, marking all poles to insure proper reassembly, etc., I still goofed it all up. Learned an...

I fail to understand how the flex lane option was deemed to be the best of the alternatives for reducing congestion and increasing safety in this corridor. I wonder what other options were seriously considered? This feels like a half-assed compromise solution driven by budgetary considerations. I c...
