The Rug Road

Looking for any recent info on this road. I drove this about 6 years ago and it was pretty tough in spots. However, now it is a way to access the west end of Aravaipa, without the hassle of a locked gate by the landowner out of Klondyke. I haven't resorted to calling the Safford Ranger district yet, or a couple of ranchers I know. If it's too bad would make a nice dayhike/backpack overland route.

I have not been on the rug road in over 10 years, but some guys in the 4 wheel drive club I belong too, have been up there.

If it's 2,000 points does it only show 1/4 or the track or does it display every 4th point?

You can work around that by joining the two halves in MapSource on the PC. I also tricked my GPSMap60CS into handling more than 500, but I can't remember how I did it.

I don't get it. It must do a divide out points cause I have 1,400+ track in mine that I uploaded of Humphries via Inner Basin. The entire track is visible.

Sorry to revive an old thread, but am wondering the condition of the road through Turkey Creek. I'd love to take my camper van out there and camp by the water. It's a big vehicle - check out the pic - it's a dodge extended passenger van, but it does have decent ground clearance.

I would guess your van would do ok at least as far as the Turkey Creek cliff dwelling. The road gets narrow beyond that. There are several creek crossing dips that could possibly pose a challenge for a vehicle as long as yours, though (as in dragging the bumper).

@louie I agree with Preston and I plotted the driving route with a number of key WPs and area hikes (to Turkey Creek Cliff Dwellings and the super nice Oak Grove Creek Canyon Hike) which is only a short 1.3 mile hiking distance further up Turkey Creek from the Cliff Dwellings area.

If you drove that van of yours out on the road I think you will plug up the road the way Roosevelt Dam plugged up Tonto Creek and the Salt River.

Having run this route in a moddef fj cruiser, with a modded 2dr rubicon along, id say that prestons comments are spot on. You may be okay for a while past that even, depending on skill, luck, and star alignment. You wont be traversing the entire route through though.

Id say its still well worth it even in the abbreviated route. You couldnt pay me to drive that thing again, but I definitely see myself returning to the turkey creek side many more times.

I'm just curious since you did not post back: Did you decide to drive your Moby Dick into the Turkey Creek area to camp/hike?

Not as of yet. I was eyeballing that for a fall trip. Might take my jeep through there first just to scope it out. I appreciate all the feedback. I'm always looking for creek side car camps for my van and kids. We love the water!
