Just say no to dogs and guns and everything will be just fine.

@joe bartels
Glad I don't live there,sounds like there is only one place to hike.
But then again when I go downtown Phoenix I carry a gun.

@Widowmaker You go to downtown, you should carry a lawyer. South Phoenix, on the other hand ...

Hahahaha....I love the very last line...Diane Whipple was not attacked by a Herding Breed of Guard Dog...Technically, they may be in the Herding Breed category, but 99% of that Breed of Dog is no longer used for Herding, at least in the U.S...It's not even a fair comparison to relate those Dogs to what is Guarding Sheep in the San Juans...I understand the Fear and it is a problem, but it sounds like between the Ranchers and the FS, they are trying to work it out....
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty & well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, totally worn out & proclaiming, "Wow What a Ride!"

Re: Guard dogs frighten hikers on high mountain trails
I've bumped into sheep dogs a couple of times a year when I lived in Idaho. All I can say is that they take their jobs seriously. One time the sheep moved into our camping area overnight while we were sleeping. So the herd was between the trailhead/camping area and a few people's cars. We ended up shuttling a couple of nervous hikers 200 yards in our car so that they could get around the dogs.

I'm not sure what my spirit animal is, but I'm confident it has rabies.
