HAZ training feats

Post by chumley »

Some people hike mountains near their home on a regular basis for training. Here on HAZ that most often means Piestewa or Camelback, but there are some Tucson and even out-of-state hikes that show up quite regularly.

I was recently discussing doing laps on Camelback or Piestewa, and wondering how many I could do if I set my mind to spending a day out there.

I did a quick check, and I think Joe did 8 laps of Piestewa (http://hikearizona.com/trip=41410) :o .

I've done a Camelback double a few times, but that's it for me.

I'd guess that a few regulars on here have put together some impressive consecutive laps on some trails around here.

So tell me, who's got the most consecutive laps on workout hikes? Not limited to Piestewa and Camelback. But probably anything that has been done 3+ times in a row just to do it.

Feel free to brag about your accomplishment here. :worthy:

I've done multiple loops around the Competitive Loops at Estrella Mtn Park. It was before I bought my Nathan Hydration Vest, so if I wanted to train longer than an hour with cool water I could swing by my car and reload.

Have also done a couple of hikes at North Mtn Preserve with multiple ascents of either North Mtn and/or Shaw Butte. My preference is to do up and over then turn around rather than back & forth on the same stretch of trail. One of my favorites is to do a North Mtn/Shaw Butte Super Loop and do an ascent of each one on the front and backside of each mountain. So it ends up being a long "S" shaped hike done in both directions.

While this is only two laps, I've never seen anyone do it since.

I did x3 loops on Finger Rock trail to Mt Kimbell... 12,750'... 13 hours 20 min... 30 miles

Did six loops on Guadalupe Peak in Texas... depending on what AEG is credited to that hike, might be my bigger day (3100-3300') (18,600'+) 48 miles

I did 10 training laps on Heart Attack Canyon Trail over here in the Sacramento Mountains... by far the most difficult; it has sections with a grade over 1600' per mile... kills you going up... not too safe going down. (16,000' day) 30 miles

I've done numerous triple loops on Ortega Peak here in Alamo... 3100'/3.9 miles... 9,000' / 20 mile days...

longest training day to date: 53 miles with 8,000' AEG...

I foolishly think I will break one of these levels by next Spring...

Dave I'd guess you've done a few laps on one of those bumps before too? I suspect JJ has done a couple of consecutive Flatirons, and Jim_H probably lapped Elden or Humphreys back in the day. Does MrBadBurn do multiples of Tumamoc?

Obviously not a crowning achievement these days and certainly nothing to crazy in this community, but my rim to rim involved three Rs and I did it in July :)

On a related note thank you Joe and Bruce for turning my previous "epic" three day back packs in the Supes into your guys' version of a 10 to 12 hour stroll in the park :?

I wouldn't call this a workout hike and it was only an out and back. Mostly to see if I could do it and shows the lengths that I will go to to avoid a shuttle.

This is IMO better option than the loop I did the previous year.

I never did laps on them. In fact, the only thing I think I ever did laps on, was Alamo Peak, above Alamogordo, NM. It lacked.

I planned to do 2 laps on Elden when I was up there 2 weeks ago, but rain canceled that. I never did on Humphrey, but I did do Humphrey two days in a row in winter.
