Cigarette butts in the Wilderness!

Post by mjmann »

I think worse beyond just the trash is when I come across cigarette butts on the trail....I ask you WHY??? :o Why on God's green earth do these bozos bring their stinkin', puking, teeth staining habits out to the beautiful wilderness?? :yuk: Leave that crap back where it belongs...ahh but I digress...

Just had to add my two cents... :monkey:

cig butts....

Post by sherileeaz »

WHOA, that's pretty bad if you ask me, not only because of the litter, but for fires. :o
I don't think the only "butts" are cigarette ones!

(ummm Joe don't ban me, I said butts not.... ) :A1:

okay, if this isn't the most lopsided poll on earth I may need to rethink hiking

just please be kind to those seeking hiking to help stop smoking

for those that really enjoy smoking in the wilderness, you're on your own with the wolves
(granted I'm sure no HAZ Member is a litter bug and would never smoke in a fire restricted area  )

Ok I must admit that i'm a smoker. And I do smoke in the wilderness. I know, I know, bla bla bla! But I do pack my butts out and I'm careful to extinguish them completely. I carry my crutch into the wilderness but am responsible enough to not burn the place down.

I'm not a smoker but since people have a right to smoke I need to respect that. What urks me is that most smokers don't seem to respect the rights of non smokers. :x

How can you smoke on the trail? :o I'm not being critical - this is an honest question. You do a lot of difficult hikes - don't the cigs make you choke and cough and slow you down?

Thank you for respecting nature and being careful and packing your butts back out with you.

I smoke but I am cutting down alot, and one of the ways that I am cutting down is by hiking, I do not have the urge to smoke while trekking around. I quit cold turkey a couple of times and gained a massive amount of weight which drastically cut down my hiking. Partly because I was carrying an extra 20lbs of food to satisfy my hunger, and partly because that 20lbs of food amounted to more calories than I was burning........I started again and found that when hiking I did not smoke. When I do get the urge to have one of the nasty things I drown the butt and put it in a baggie I carry. I will come to the point where I won't have to carry that baggie, or the smokes.

I'll butt out...

I don't want my comments to turn into smokers vs non-smokers so I'll

BUTT OUT!

(i loves puns!) :D

I think it basically comes down to respect for yourself and others with any issue.

To answer Newbie hiker's question, when I do smoke on the trail its very little and somtimes not at all on the more difficult hikes. I don't cough and choke when I hike, but the fact that I am a smoker somtimes does tend to slow me a bit. Yet I have no problem keeping up with other non-smoking hikers at my level.

I smoke and I keep thinking it should slow me down but I usually end up kicking they bahonies. I think that it is because they all carry monster packs for a handicap--I appreciate that they do :)

Didn't mean to offend anyone...sorry  I respect all your rights to smoke. I myself am a reformed smoker...haven't had a butt in 20 years. I'm also from NY and when I moved here I was totally awestruck at the beauty and freshness of the desert...especially when I began hiking. I was so used to cigarette butts thrown everywhere back home it kind of irked me to see them carelessly tossed out in the desert wilderness. One...obviously for the fire hazard...but also it just seemed to defeat the purpose of exercising and enjoying nature.

Again, I apologize if I offended anyone and I'm sure most folks who are members of this website are conscientious when it comes to respecting not only the desert habitat but also their fellow hikers.

First, let me say I am still battling the nicotine habit, not cigarettes though. However, when ever I go out hiking, should I find a butt on the deck, I am always shocked! :o I never get over it because I wonder who in their right mind would want to drag on a smoke while hiking at 7000 plus feet. :?: They are out there though. Lazy men and women who give no thought to what they are doing on the trail, it is not the habit of smoking which offends me; I class them along with the litterer's. I seen beer cans, candy wrappers, bra's, brass (empty shell casings from firearms), shotgun shells, diapers, juice boxes, water bottles, ect. Some things are left by mistake I am sure, I found a nice small umbrella in the Woodchute one time; however, a Butterfinger wrapper in the bush, is a crime.

What? Nobody likes trash on the trail??? That might explain why I usually have the N. Phoenix Landfill trail all to myself. I thought it was just because there was no reliable water sources along the route.
