I thought I'd throw an idea out on the table

maybe we could combine the map & compass event with another that's been requested

how about...

the 1st Annual HAZ BBQ

I'm thinkin' South Mountain, Papago(but it closes at dusk) or Piestewa(the other side which is more of a park)
or wherever is good for orienteering & a BBQ

mid July Saturday, starts late afternoon with map & compass then the masses join for one hum dinger of a BBQ

might need more guides than just Matt if there's a lot of folks

Sounds like a great plan Matt

I'd venture to guess those coming from the far edges of the valley would prefer an "all in one day event"

Anybody with ideas of an indoor get-together near that area?

Your right Joe; the only issue I have with that is I probably have to work until two on Sat. As long as we could squeeze it all in, I'm game. I would really prefer one day as well.

As for an indoor meeting place, that really depends on the size of the group. If its small I will volunteer my apt. ( I live right by Papago) if not, we have to find somewhere else. I'm guessing its not going to be a small group.

Thats not a bad Idea AK, but remember how crowded it was on a tuesday? It'll probably be twice as bad on a saturday, and some of the other members may have an issue with all the smoking.

Better yet, we could have the BBQ out in the middle of NOWHERE! & to get there you gotta figure it out from sketchy clues

btw... just kiddin

I think AK is thinking about the potato salad already

anyhow, good point matt, it's gotta work around your schedule

I imagine something like Dennys or Village Inn wouldn't have a problem with us hanging around looking at maps for a few hours. I used to hold study groups at Dennys.

Denny's and BBQ

Post by sherileeaz »

JimmineyGrl wrote:Oh yes... the one attached to the Best Western. You can spot the BW from the freeway (202)
That works for me. I'll be coming from Avondale, and on a good day it's only 30 minutes via I-10 to 202.

Just an idea  , but if it takes more than one day, we could make a decision after the first class on when to do the next one.

So lets try for after 2 pm at Denny's on a Saturday then go to the BBQ for the remainder of the day. If there is a need for a second meeting, make those plans then.

What ya think?

Maybe a second class/group hike at a location of Professor Gilbert's choosing? Call it a lab?

Matt, you're the greatest, I'm looking forward to the class. I would offer meeting at my house if it were closer to the park, but it's not. Thanks Matt, and let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

In response to sherileeaz's reply:
Well I actually meant a hands on class on a hike. But not a bad interpretation of my thoughts.

BBQ

Post by GeorgAZ »

As usual.I work every Saturday until about 4/5 pm, so will miss the part I really need!Never was the "compass Queen" and have gotten turned around a few times! I live near Papago, but my townhouse is too small for big groups and unfortunately we have no clubhouse. I'd like to show up for the rest and hopefully meet you all again and see that Joe does exist! It that what the search is about??

If we meet at Four Peaks I will have a reason for not understanding anything I learned. It all sounds good to me. I can't make it on the 19th though. I will be in Wilcox picking cheeries, apples, corn, and such. Their U-Pick season starts that weekend. :)

There are some restaurants that have seperate rooms you can reserve @ no charge provided you have anough heads to put in them.
This is a great idea, and thanks to all putting this together. I am wondering if the BBQ and the Class should be two separate events.

All this talk about maps and compasses has really got me excited to learn what they are after all this time.
