Re: Riordan Mansion
Thanks for posting this! I have yet to visit the place, and now it's going on my "to do" list for this summer.

Re: Riordan Mansion
I agree as a native Zonie I am ashamed to have not gone there. My very first image of Flagstaff was coming around a bend and into a valley and seeing and smelling the lumber mill.

Seeing a lumber mill is one thing, but smelling a lumber mill is an experience in itself.

My dad chewed Copenhagen snuff and smoked, so a sawmill smelled great.

One of my first jobs was nailing pallets together at a saw mill...piece work, my brother and I had to split .27 cents per pallet and when the cool temps did not have the nail guns acting up we could make a pretty good hourly rate..we also occasionally filled in on the tail saw, grabbing, sorting, stacking, unjamming and generally feeling very
oh to be 13 working under the table at a saw mill with no regard for OSHA in northern Michigan...those were the days ;)

Re: Riordan Mansion
Was it jack pine in Michigan? That probably smells pretty good. Back when I was in forestry school and we toured the mills, that was a lot of fun. The GP Palatka, FL plylog mill smelled like cookies! The saw mill smelled like lumber, which was nice, the chip plant was the same. The paper mills isn't bad on the inside, and sometimes the outside smells good, too. Log landings are the best, because that is were all the fresh are stacked.

Re: Riordan Mansion
But now Flagstaff doesn't smell of the lumber mill but of Purina.

Not much Jack Pine, most loggers tend to view that as garbage wood, good for slab wood, that's about it. In Michigan we burn our jack pine forest to make homes for Kirtland Warblers...

I keep meaning to visit Riordan Mansion, but somehow I always end up going for another dose of town food instead.
