I thought I'd throw an idea out on the table

maybe we could combine the map & compass event with another that's been requested

how about...

the 1st Annual HAZ BBQ

I'm thinkin' South Mountain, Papago(but it closes at dusk) or Piestewa(the other side which is more of a park)
or wherever is good for orienteering & a BBQ

mid July Saturday, starts late afternoon with map & compass then the masses join for one hum dinger of a BBQ

might need more guides than just Matt if there's a lot of folks

meeting place

Don't know Denny's policy, but in order to reserve for a large group, it is required that you dine there or spend some amount of $$ to hold the room/booths.etc. Then there's the folks who will stay and prep the BBQ area. Just some things to consider. After all,the rest might get lost!!

Four Peaks has kegs & growlers to go - you can take it anywhere - even bottles. I found a couple Four Peaks bottles in my trunk after the Tonto Narrows clean up even (Thanks Matt.)

Sounds like Joe, Sherri and Matt are on the planning - let me know if there is something I can do. It might be a good idea to re-visit Four Peaks and discuss how all this will go down - what is a good time/ date for you Joe (if you really exist?)

It's nice of you to lend your experience to the mapping class Matt. I think I have a grasp on the subject - but I'm sure there are several things I could learn as well.

Planning

Post by sherileeaz »

In response to bryanmertz's reply:

As soon as the date is set which Matt is working on, we can start with planning the rest of it.
FYI, I'm not available from June 28th through the morning of the 6th. Other than that week, I'll be able to meet when needed.

What about the Monastary in Phoenix? It's an indoor/outdoor bar with vollyball courts and BBQs outside. You buy your food there and cook it yourself. They are aimed primarily at groups, so it would be a great fit for us.

If I can make it, I could help teach map & compass and beer drinking. We'll see how my schedule goes...

You might want to consider a quick GPS class too. I've found that a lot of people that have them don't really know how to use them. They are worlds easier to use, more accurate and would be a better option if you were lost. To preemptively counter the old school non-GPS crowd, yes everyone should still know how to use a map and compass just in case your batteries die.

I am thinking of just doing basic map and compass this time and then having an advanced M&C at a later date, part of which would be a gps unit.

For those of you who wanted an in-depth lesson, don't worry your still getting one. There is so much to know about map and compass use that its doubtful if a handful of people ever really know all there is about them in a lifetime. When I say basic I mean the fundamentals (of which there are plenty to keep us occupied for at least an afternoon.

Going somewhere after the M&C instruction kind of undercuts the basic idea here. So for the moment I'm going to stick with BBQ at papago, where we'll be doing the map work, thanks for the ideas though.

I agree "Son" as I feel this was the original intent of the meeting and then to have a BBQ where we can relax and enjoy a nice time with other hikers and friends.

There's no reason we can't continue to have more meetings and plan other events, but for this first one, lets keep it simple and to the point with basic M&C skills and then "graduate" up to other things later. Ok Professor Gilbert? :D

Hey SON, why don't you ever call your Mom?? haha (sorry couldn't resist that joke!)

Matt do you use a thumb compass for your orienteering and hiking? What type of compass you want people to have for your class, a map compass(card compass), a thumb compass, lensatic compass or just a regular old compass. Your life will be miserable if everyone comes with a different type of compass. Are you going to be using regular topo maps or special orienteering maps? Sounds like a great idea to me and should be very informative!!

Daryl I agree about the GPS, and it is amazing how many people have them an don't have a clue how to use them. They use the wrong datum, may have maps that are in degrees, minutes and seconds and have their unit set to degrees minutes minutes or degree seconds seconds or even UTM and not have a clue.

Hey Matt,

Picked up a cheapo Ozark Trail "Lensatic Compass" at Walmart tonight for $4.97. Hope this will suffice for the class :?:

I will use a standard map compass. They are rectangular, clear plastic with a round housing for the needle that is filled with fluid. Please don't go out and get anything yet I will provide specific directions for what you will need when I post this as a group hike. (by the way, you will need to sign up for the class in the group hike section of the site, but I'll let you know when that gets posted)

I will be going over regular topo maps, we will also go over some of the other more commonly used maps (yes, like road maps).

I must admit all, I might even come on down to your neck of the woods and participate in the compass course, as well as. the BBQ.

Orienteering and BBQ

Post by Giovanna »

I think The Monastery is a good idea because of its proximity to Papago Park (that is where we are having the class, isn't it?); we don't have to store food until the end of class; no one has to host the event at their home and then deal with the mess; and everyone can come and go as they please. They have no special area to set aside for us to have a discussion or hold a class so we would have to finish up at one of the ramadas and then just enjoy each other's company at the restaurant.

If we have a time set for the class and a time for the BBQ we can meet folk who don't want or can't get to the class.

-I have not made any decisions for the group. I simply made some preliminary inquiries and am presenting the information I gleaned-

Monastery
No monastery here, basically a recreational place. Located on one and a half acres of trees and sitting areas. Bring the kids or the dog and just hangout in one of the game areas. Live music offered on Friday and Saturday.

I don't care for the Monastery idea

Sorry, but I'm not associating HAZ with that place
Go to their site and look at the pictures, it doesn't have a family feel to me at all.

This is a hiking site, a park is a natural for a BBQ
Maybe this isn't the best time of year and maybe the two events shouldn't be combined.
But I can say if there's a HAZ BBQ I prefer that it's in a park. If Papago isn't good there's other options. At a cooler time of year during the day I would think some of the lakes are nice. The lower section of the Scottsdale Greenbelt is good for functions such as this too.

Keep in mind I've been in the restaurant biz for nearly twenty years. I hike to get away from that crap. Going to restaurants & bars, it's like going to work

I don't really care where we have it or how we have it. I'd just like to learn the proper use of a compass as well as understanding a topo map and also meet fellow hikers. I think the whole idea of this is to share information and have fun.

Again, I'm open to anything and anywhere. Just let me know and I'll be there.

Hope we can all agree on something.
