Good idea.

and maybe we could add this to the side panel with the FS alerts? don't know how difficult that is or if there's room but it's a thought. Altho, usually we get alerts on the Forum so that's probably sufficient for some of us.
For me, sometimes it's just as much about the journey as the destination.
Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled.

Alerts are nice ... but you can always check the ADOT page online.

http://www.az511.gov has a list/map of current incidents (good for tracking accidents while you are on the road)
Current updates are also available on twitter @ArizonaDOT (http://twitter.com/ArizonaDOT)

Hmmm, ADOT seems to have a little problem with directions. I drove by northbound just after 5 am and southbound around 5:30 pm today (thankfully no construction going on) and it sure looks to me like the escape ramp is for the northbound lane... after all, on that hill the southbound lane is uphill.

It's nice not to have to change lanes to avoid the rough spots now that they've done some repaving farther south. :y:

ADOT recommends drivers be prepared for winter driving conditions

A major winter storm is forecast to push through Arizona and the Arizona Department of Transportation wants drivers traveling in the high country to be prepared.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for the mountains and high deserts throughout northern and eastern Arizona. Snow levels may be as low as 2,000 feet. Rain is expected in the lower elevations.

ADOT crews have been preparing for the storm and will be working 24/7 to keep roads clear. Maintenance crews are checking the snowplows and making sure they are stocked with de-icing products. Additional snowplow drivers have been sent to areas expecting significant snowfall, like Flagstaff and Williams.

Drivers should plan ahead and be very cautious if planning to travel to the high country when the storm arrives. ADOT recommends drivers wait until conditions improve before traveling.

More safety tips for drivers:

Slow down, be patient and drive safely. Plan for extra travel time. Use extra caution around snowplows.
Be alert: ice forms on bridges first and is hard to see.
When driving behind a snowplow, stay back at least four car lengths. If you think you’re traveling too close to a plow, you probably are. Be safe and stay back!
Never pass a snowplow that’s in the process of clearing snow and ice off the road.
Maintain at least a three-quarter-full tank of gas.
Notify someone of your travel route, destination and projected arrival time.
Carry an emergency preparedness kit in your vehicle that includes blankets, extra clothes, a flashlight, an ice scraper, a shovel, sand for traction, a fully charged cell phone, and hazard warning lights or reflectors.
Brake slowly to avoid any panic braking or jerking the steering wheel.
Increase the distance between you and the traffic ahead.
Carry plenty of food and water, and all necessary medications.
Carry tire chains and snow cables, or use snow tires.
Wear warm clothes to protect you during extended time periods in cold temperatures.

Bridge work resumes on SR 260 east of Payson next week

Westbound traffic will be shifted to eastbound lanes
After upgrading five eastbound bridge approaches on State Route 260 last fall, the Arizona Department of Transportation is returning this month to replace and repave the approaches to three westbound bridges between mileposts 272-277, approximately 20 miles east of Payson.

Motorists traveling along SR 260 should allow extra travel time and be aware that westbound traffic will be shifted to the eastbound lanes, which will become a two-way roadway through the five-mile work zone, beginning on Tuesday, March 24. A 10-foot width restriction will be in place throughout construction and drivers should be aware of heavy traffic during peak travel times.

The $2.9 million improvement project, which is expected to be completed in August, includes the removal of the existing bridge approaches and departure slabs, repaving the roadway at the bridge approaches, guardrail reconstruction and the replacement of existing pavement markings.

Northbound I-17 will be closed between Glendale and Peoria avenues from 9 p.m. Friday to 11 p.m. Saturday (June 13). I-17 northbound on-ramps at Camelback and Bethany Home roads also closed. DETOUR: Please avoid area if possible. Consider alternate routes, including SR 51 northbound in Phoenix or Loop 101 northbound in West Valley. Northbound I-17 traffic will detour along frontage road, but heavy backups should be expected.

US 60 passing lane project east of Superior starts this week
Intermittent closures for blasting work will be necessary following Fourth of July weekend. Notices of all closures will be advertised a week before each closure is to occur.

The first of a series of planned improvement projects along US 60 between Superior and Globe will start Wednesday, June 17, when the Arizona Department of Transportation begins work to construct a new passing lane from Devils Canyon to Oak Flat (mileposts 231-233), along with other improvements.

When completed, this $8.8 million safety improvement project will make it easier for motorists to pass large trucks and slow-moving vehicles whose speed drops because of the sustained grades along this stretch of highway from Devil’s Canyon to the Oak Flat area.

There will be minimal impacts to the traveling public during this initial phase of the project prior to Fourth of July holiday weekend.

Construction of the passing lane and some shoulder widening will require US 60 to be closed during blasting, which will start after the Independence Day holiday weekend.

The project will include the following:
Construction of a new westbound passing lane from Devil’s Canyon to Oak Flat (mileposts 231-233)
Widening shoulders in the Devil’s Canyon area (milepost 233-234)
Improvements to the Waterfall Canyon bridge (milepost 229)
Box culvert drainage improvements (milepost 242 just west of Miami)

Work hours will be 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Work crews may also be working at night during different phases of the construction. The project is anticipated to be completed by summer 2016.

Removing several areas of rock embankment will require blasting during the project. The first phase of blasting is being planned for the week after the Fourth of July holiday weekend during morning hours around 9 a.m. The exact day has not been determined. Blasting will occur about every five to seven days in a five-month period until it is completed. Closures during the initial blasts may be up to three hours. As blasting continues there will be a lesser impact on traffic and delays will be reduced.

ADOT will work to minimize the traffic impacts as much as possible, including scheduling some nighttime work.

There will be narrow traffic lanes, wide-load restrictions and a reduced speed limit through the work zone. Flaggers and pilot cars will be used at different times throughout the project. Drivers are asked to use caution, watch for construction equipment and personnel, and allow extra time for your commute.

I wonder if this is in Anticipation of more Traffic due to a larger Mine in the Area.... :?

Without a doubt. Those monstrous double and triple dump mining trucks barreling along at 75 miles an hour will have to have someplace to pass all those HAZ jeeps, suv's and FJ4's. :scared: ;)

Quite possible.
Still, I believe it is a short-term stop-gap solution well in advance of the 'still-in-the-planning-stage' complete rebuilding (divided highway 2 lanes each way) and very likely rerouting of the 60 at the same time. But then it is still probably 10 years off before construction begins and by time it's completed, if it ever starts, I'll likely be dead and gone.

This is unrelated to the mine. Regular road upgrade based on current/historical traffic patterns.

Pavement repair on SR 260 east of Payson for the next five weeks
One mile will be restricted on eastbound lanes near Kohl’s Ranch

The Arizona Department of Transportation will repair a dip in the roadway on State Route 260 eastbound near Kohl’s Ranch, approximately 19 miles east of Payson starting tomorrow between mileposts 270 and 271. Crews will be working on the roadway through Oct. 17.

Work will require the roadway to be narrowed to one lane through the work zone and a 14-foot width restriction will be in place.
