Potential Trip up to Flagstaff [ Canceled ]
I don't know how to make an official event, but I'm thinking of going up to Flagstaff (Abineau Bear Jaw/Kachina Trails) a couple Saturdays from tomorrow. I will have room for three others in my backseat if you are interested.
It will be my first trip up 'north' so I'd like to have someone go that's been before. I live in N. Phoenix at Carefree Highway.

Re: Potential Trip up to Flagstaff **Saturday July 11th**
At the top of this page, there's a place to link descriptions to trails you are planning on hiking. I added the Abineau/Bear Jaw hikes and Kachina. By doing that, your event appears on the top of those hike pages for anybody else who might be looking to hike them (for example see: http://hikearizona.com/decoder.php?ZTN=351)
Either you or somebody else already selected a date at the top of the page too ... which is what makes the event appear on the home page calendar.

I might be interested if I can get my foot issues under control. Been on a few trails up there and can play tour guide.

@Jason Cleghorn
Better if I stay away. If I sign up it'll sabotage your event and nobody else will want to come anymore!

Sounds interesting but I would take my own car as I would not want to slow anyone down. I can hike out on my own of course Rowdy would be with me. Just have some sort of route so I can hike out on my own.

Re: Potential Trip up to Flagstaff **Saturday July 11th**
Wasn't sure how to close this out but it looks like this is going to be a family affair rather than a HAZ affair... Sorry if you were contemplating going. The trail will be there and I'll organize another trip up.

Re: Potential Trip up to Flagstaff **Saturday July 11th**
Dammit! And I was thinking of showing up after all! ;)
And don't forget -- HAZ IS a family.
With all the positives and negatives that might entail.
I hope you have a nice weekend up there!

Re: Potential Trip up to Flagstaff [ Canceled ]
We had a good time. Kids whined a lot, but the unfathomably beautiful (to me, I know there is better) scenery made up for it! Can't wait to go back with 'hikers' so that I can make a full day (or overnight) of it...

Re: Potential Trip up to Flagstaff [ Canceled ]
@Jason Cleghorn
My daughter, the youngest of three kids, used to whine a lot on family hikes, but eventually she did become a backpacker. Her first Grand Canyon backpack was Hermit Creek at age 12. My boys never whined and were ready for backpacking any time I said, "Let's go." Their first GC backpacks were at ages 10 and 11. But we did a lot of backpacking in the Catalinas, too.
I learned this: in order to get my daughter to go willingly it had to be short and there had to be a swimming hole! Nowadays, for her, (age 30) it seems there STILL has to be a specific destination such as mountaintop view, swimming hole, or Havasu Falls, etc.
Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts helped my kids a lot, too. The Boy Scout troop they were in did not do any car camping. Backpacking and canoe camping only. The Girl Scouts in our neighborhood were very, very wimpy but they did at least go car camping and on short hikes.
