Drones in the Wilderness
I recently found a high quality drone video on youtube flying around the Dacite Cliffs by the Don's Camp. This is a 15 minute video so grab a cold one, sit back and enjoy the ride.
I'm not sure what the regulations are for flying drones in the Superstition Wilderness, but I heard that they don't look favorably on them and a permit would almost be assured. I would check with the Mesa Ranger District for a clarification if anyone is thinking about using one in the Superstitions.

On every trip into the Superstitions, I find another Gold Mine. Today the mine was filled with Memories. I can not wait for the next trip.

Re: Drones in the Wilderness
Seems to me there's more to the story, and without the full back-story I'm not on either side, however...
From the article:
“I also ask you [Bret McBay] the courtesy of not shooting live ammunition in our direction,” he [Eric Joe] wrote. “This is the third time discharge from your firearms has hit our house and property” -- following a bullet hole in one of the family’s doors and a raining birdshot in their backyard.
That's not what I would call a decent shot... oh wait, he CAN hit the broadside of a house.
If he did, in fact, shoot it down over his neighbor's land, I'm not so sure his action was warranted. (But again, what else don't we know here?)
Speaking of unwanted noise (and pollution)... leaf blowers should be banned!
Wow! REALLY?hikeaz wrote:I think that Mr. McBay's action was warranted. (he's a decent shot, too).

What's wrong with one's own land? While the article doesn't give any idea what size lots or how much land each man owned, I see nothing wrong with playing with real flying machines or kid's toys on one's own land. If it is something that makes a lot of noise (not just a small buzzing sound), then yes, find a more suitable public place.hikeaz wrote:If grown men want to play with kid's toys, go to the park or other public space.

Good insight there. I do believe McBay should pay the man for property damages no matter how much I disagree with drones and their various uses.

Re: Drones in the Wilderness
I have been thinking about getting a drone when I go in mineshafts. I figured it would see snakes and maybe some other creatures moving around. I would think that it would as long as I am in the mine to. Of course if I do get one it will be armed with a go pro. I think a drone would be nice to use just to scout ahead or if I see something interesting it can check it out and then I can decide if I want to check it out myself.

Re: Drones in the Wilderness
I did hike the Javalina Trail about two years ago. I remember that there was a major construction project being built out there. And while I was hiking I had a drone following me. As I got closer to the construction site I could see this guy down there with a controller and I wonder if I had a gun and I shot it out of the sky would I get in trouble? After all it was following me for no reason.

Re: Drones in the Wilderness
@Alston Neal Been a lot of brain-dead drone operators out there recently. Rules and regs are too loose yet as the personal drones are becoming more popular and operators aren't properly trained on the legalities of flying them.

Re: Drones in the Wilderness
Probably the FAA will get involved, or some other agency, and make it a lot harder for idiots to do stupid things with them. If you tell people they could find more peace and satisfaction with only their two feet, a bottle of water and a sandwich, they won't believe you. Gotta have toys...

Re: Drones in the Wilderness
Unfortunately, the drones are protected by the FAA (read the link) http://gizmodo.com/is-it-ok-to-shoot-do ... 1718055028cactuscat wrote:Shoot 'em all down!
I guess that kinda says it all! Seems like a stupid law (nothing new) that would protect a nuisance device so perhaps the answer lies with going after the operator.......Hmmmm

This sounds like an excellent reason to become skilled with a sling, or rock thrower. If you can hit it without a gun, it is clearly too low.
