Oracle lodging and TH rides

Post by chumley »

I just saw a photo advertising specifically to thru-hikers who want a night off the trail in Oracle.

It may be of interest to those in the segment 13/14 area.

How to get to trailhead at highway 87

Post by Court »

Hi.

I just arrived in phoenix and I am hoping to start a section hike on Tuesday 20th Oct. I am planning on starting from the intersection with highway 87.

Does anyone know the best way to get there? I don't mind hitchhiking but I have no local knowledge of this area. Is there a best place to hitch hike from?

Or is there a.company that does shuttles?

Thanks, Courtney.

Hello,

Three of us are going to Washington Park, which is 18.5 trail miles south of the Highway 87 TH, tomorrow. We are leaving the from the Arby's at Shea and Highway 87 (Beeline) at 7:00 AM.

I'm going to the Highway 87 TH on Thursday, leaving Ahwatukee (south end of the Valley) in the middle of the night to be there by 8:00 AM.

If we can arrange to join up, you are welcome to come along either trip and we can drop you off.

PM for further details, I'm posting here so you don't think I'm some sort of internet creep. :)

Include a photo of that vehicle we saw you driving on Saturday. If that doesn't put you in the clear, then I don't know what would

Thanks for the help everyone.

Just to clarify I am planning on starting at passage 22.

Stredfeild, I am not quite organised enough to leave tomorrow but if my Tuesday hitchhiking plan doesn't work out I will let you know :)

Also, since I am new in this country, where can I find cliff bars? I have heard they are great but I have never tried them. I went to a Mexican supermarket today and they didn't have any (not so surprising). I am staying close to downtown phoenix if that helps. Also is beef Jerky easy to find at other supermarkets?

Thanks :)

most supermarkets will have beef jerky as well as cliff bars. There is a REI store in Tempe thats has all that and you can even get them both at Wal-mart.
Oh be safe watch out for internet creeps. :y:

Courtney,
Are you only doing section 22? What makes you want to do that one-- the road access?

No. I am not only doing that section. I have about a month. It just seemed like easy access. Phoenix has an airport (I flew in from new York yesterday) and there is a highway that goes past the trail there.

I would like to try and get to the grand canyon but it might be too cold by the time I get up that way. I will just take it week by week and see what happens with the weather. I am going to be going to colorado for thanksgiving so I have until then to hike.

You can get Cliff Bars and other bars at any grocery store or Walmart. Hitchhiking is illegal in AZ. You might be able to use Uber to get to your destination, but I'm not sure since I've never used Uber.

Welcome to Arizona and as far as a ride out there I'll go with gummo on using Uber and I never had used them either but they should save you a lot of money if you can't find a shuddle. Have a great and safe hike and we all are looking forward to your triplog and photo sets.

If you don't already have other arrangements for Tuesday, I could drive you up to the TH.

And since I haven't hiked that first portion of AZT 22 if you didn't mind the company I could hike along with you for the first 4 or 5 miles.

If hitchhiking is illegal in AZ, is there another option to get from HWY 87 to a supply town? Are there quite a few people hiking in the area, one could ask for a ride? Of course don't know yet when I'll be there...

Hitchhiking is not illegal in Arizona. Standing in the road is illegal.

Standing on a sidewalk, shoulder or berm and soliciting a ride is permitted.

Whether local law enforcement sees it that way or not is entirely up to him or her. But it's good to know the relevant laws.
Code 28-796 Pedestrian on roadways

A. If sidewalks are provided, a pedestrian shall not walk along and on an adjacent roadway.

B. If sidewalks are not provided, a pedestrian walking along and on a highway shall walk when practicable only on the left side of the roadway or its shoulder facing traffic that may approach from the opposite direction.

C. A person shall not stand in a roadway for the purpose of soliciting a ride from the driver of a vehicle.

22. "Roadway" means that portion of a highway that is improved, designed or ordinarily used for vehicular travel, exclusive of the berm or shoulder.

chumley, appreciate clearing up the legal aspects. I did have a harder time getting rides in Arizona than other places.
