The 2023?!?! Cyclical totals discussion thread.

Post by Jim »

How are things progressing this year? In keeping with the idea that you are only as good as the numbers you post, I'm up to 61,436' of elevation for the year and a modest 132 miles.
Added August 2019: Looking back 10 years later, I honestly can't think of anything more offensive or unhealthy to say about one's hiking, than the above statement. Thats was my OP in 2009. Hiking should never just be about the stats recorded.

January 31, 2023: Have at it.

I finally got my answer to a question I forgot to ask, years ago. It appears people really do prefer miles to AEG/ elevation gain. At least, that is how I interpret the stats with more people above me in miles, but few in AEG, for right now.

I agree that most people probably find miles more enjoyable to accumulate than elevation. I enjoy having accumulated elevation more than the process of accumulating it.

So maybe I've been living under a cave [or out on the trails] but I honesty never even noticed the HAZ stats until I had extra time on my hands the past few weeks...

...that said, does anyone happen to know if there is a way to go back in time and see the stats for a given day or month; so, for example, for the 2016 list for highest AEG, is there a way to see the 'leader board' and corresponding AEGs through March 24th 2016 [or through March if it can't do exact dates]?

The stats are really fun to look at, but as far as my personal goals are concerned, they are nothing more than a means to an end [if that]. :)

No, only the yearly stats are visible. But I have wondered if we could play with the stats to find specific amounts during certain periods of time. I loaded a few periods in to excel once. Very nerdy, but I learned how much I did during peak 12 month hiking periods, as opposed to just during a calendar year.

@Jim_H
Is there a way to export the data into Excel or a CSV or something then, or did you just do it by hand?

I'm curious because I want to know how many miles I'm getting out of my shoes. I know what day I first hiked in them and I'll know when I'll throw them in the trash (It will be soon). I just don't want to have to manually tally everything up if I can help it.

Also, is there a way to easily get to the stats page. The link just seems to randomly appear at the top and now I just bounce back and forth between the Home button and the Forum button until it shows up.

On a desktop computer, the graphs at the bottom of the homepage have hotlinks on the titles that if you click will open the stats charts. On mobile they aren't there. So if you're on mobile, the link for self momentum is http://hikearizona.com/x.php?I=9.9

@rcorfman
your personal stats page is found under your profile (kokopelli icon) and then selecting the triplogs tab.
profile.php?u=48292&ID=46
Scroll to the bottom of the page to see the stats. You can sort on each category by clicking on the column heading. Reverse sort by clicking again.

Being past the 2016 1/2 way point, observing other people's stats, does it seem like the higher board players, aside from 1 or 2 newer ones making a run for stats, are not on track to meet last year, or the last few years totals? I'm not, but I don't care to be. Joe, JJ, others, seems all are off. Then again, it's hot, and the second wind of October to December is yet to come.

I lost a prime month to injury. I also wish we had a retired category and a folks that work category to filter by, LOL.

If I didn't have a job, I'd have 3X the miles, minimum.

Tell that to JJ. He has multiple jobs.

Or a category for people that want to remain happily married or dating.

I am looking pretty off from last year, more family stuff going on I guess, and me getting that kayak and actually using it at least once a month. No worries, I can certainly benefit from some upper body work out too. I am actually going to have to kick it up a notch here to even get back to 2014 numbers. I like that idea of a category for hikers with a spouse and family to look after... :D

I have modified my circuit to gain less AEG in addition my hiking frequency has gone down 9 days off this 1/2 year vs 7 days total for 2015. Also, I have added more easy/ recovery days. Vitamin I helps too.

well how about joining me in this challenge a lot of us are doing on Facebook (my long lost, now found cousin got me started and since I want to keep up our reunion) ;) :
I hope it's okay to post this Joe, if not, wave the magic wand and make it disappear...

I'm down on miles but pretty normal on elevation. It seems like I have a bunch of friends this year outside of my normal hiking group that want me to take them out on the trails so I've had to tone down the mileage on some weekends.

I'm gonna blame falling behind on my overall charisma, likable nature, and general popularity. ;)

I have no idea how many miles or feet I've hiked, but I've got a spreadsheet that tracks my charisma, likable nature, and general popularity through the number of followers and how many likes I get on a variety of social media. Because these are the stats that are most important to me!

Now that you mention it, I've covered barely half the miles and AEG as this time last year. :-({|=

Why? What are the top three reasons?
Our survey says....

1. Injuries... two, not counting the minor ones of no lasting consequence
:stretch:
2. Advancing age... although the arthritis seems to be advancing faster than age
:-({|=
3. Time (& $$) spent maintaining the Jeep... it's getting old right along with me
:bdh:

But wait, there is a positive to be found!
:y:
I've already mountain biked 3 times as many miles as I did ALL of last year, so it looks like I'm trading hiking miles for biking.
(Of course the $2K+ spent on the new bike late last year is providing plenty of incentive.)
