Squaw perks

Post by rcorfman »

I'm curious if anyone knows any of the history behind Squaw perks (N 32° 50.926 W 112° 28.565)? There's no route on HAZ to them. Here's some pictures from the geocaching website.

In 1996, 73 Arizona locations began with the word squaw, including:
10 squaw peaks
4 squaw perks
1 squaw cox-comb

In 2003, newly elected Governor Janet Napolitano petitioned the state board to rename Squaw Peak to Piestewa Peak. The Governor's lobbying, while ultimately successful has since proven to ignite an overwhelmingly narcissistic culture.

@joebartels
Thanks for the map to the Squaw perks mountains I wanted to discuss. I really didn't want to start a "Squaw Peak Haters" thread so instead I thought I'd attempt to learn curious history from our beloved state. I'm curious about the history with that pair of peaks. For example, when were the barrels placed on top and covered with pink paint?

Might know someone who knows the answer about the barrels. Placed by helicopter, I heard. I will let you know if I can find out.

@rcorfman
figured the naming would be part of "any" history of which I found historians do not know other than they figured to be named by locals

@rwstorm might know more

Lonely cowboys inventing crude names for things, probably the history writes itself.
