Arizona Movies

Post by joebartels »

Apologies to the moderators if there is already a forum thread... I looked but this site is ridiculously huge.

Recently came across a 1983 tv movie Kenny Rogers As the Gambler Part II - The Adventure Continues
There is a bunch of Sedona & Superstition ( Apacheland? ) scenery. Several different locations in Sedona are recognisable. Even if you don't hike much there is one scene right beside Cathedral/Bell Rock. Also a scene in Ponderosa near a small lake. Not sure, maybe [ Prime and Vail Lakes ]

What really caught my attention was a scene I think they filmed in Weekes Wash. I wouldn't think they could get a permit for that but it sure looked familiar. [ Weekes Wash ]

Has anyone else wasted their time and watched "Dark Mountain"? It's kind of like Blair Witch Project but set in the Superstitions. Its full of all sorts of moments that will drive you insane-- like saying they're at First Water but obviously they've begun at Peralta. It's currently on Hulu.

I turned down the thermostat to 58 degrees, consumed a half pound of salt, threw a twenty in the garbage and watched the flick. Spoiler alert: Sage Howard never gets naked. The scary part is an unexpected shot of some guys junk.

Since I like the Superstitions and the lore of the dutchman I watched it. I can't imagine anyone else wasting ( kyle was right ) their time.

I, on the other hand, watched the High Chaparral (Sat afternoons at 2PM) and enjoyed great vistas including what I think they call "movie something or other" by White Stallion Ranch (list of movies filmed here besides High Chaparral) http://www.whitestallion.com/the-ranch/movie-history/. And alas, Blue Boy didn't get his girl. That show always has some good Arizona scenery though as it was filmed by the Tucson Mountains http://www.thehighchaparral.com/maps.htm
For me, sometimes it's just as much about the journey as the destination.
Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled.

Speaking of stunning hiking movies, this one of course not being it. But if you're willing to drop your standards and consume massive amounts of anything mind altering, then Dark Mountain is it.
Filmed in the Sups, three film makers venture in to document three filmmakers in the Sups. Yep a total rip off of Blair Witch Project, but entertaining none the less. It has two things going for it, filmed in the Sups and the movie eventually ends. This would have been a much better movie if
A. The Blair Witch Project had not been made.
B. Dark Mountain had not been made.
Great HAZ party flick though and for that I would give it three thumbs up. Unless of course there is no booze or drugs present, then it would just suck....the party not the movie.... :sl:

I caught "The Wraith" a few months back on one of the cable stations. Pretty funny to watch them race a car up and down Mt. Lemmon and hang out at Sabino Canyon. One of Charlie Sheen's early roles.

Sadly, filmed in Oregon.

We stumbled on this Oater a couple of years ago. Not the best but what was really cool is the finale which was actually filmed inside Montezuma's Castle. It was neat seeing their prospective down the canyon.

Last Saturday I turned on the tv and it was on the TCM channel from the night before. Stagecoach was on and in the background was a clear shot of Superstition Mt. Then one of the characters driving the stagecoach said, "here comes Lee's Ferry". and of course where they were next looked absolutely nothing like Lee's Ferry. Then they said they had to go to Lordsburg (sp?), and suddenly they were in Monument Valley.

The new Vacation movie had some quick shots of the Navajo Bridge(s), Marble Canyon Lodge and the road back to Lee's Ferry. I recognized a water tower that I was sent to do construction inspection work on when I worked private sector 16 years ago.
