Nalgene BPA-free

Post by joebartels »

I noticed little labels on all the Nalgene bottles at REI stating they're BPA-free. So does this mean they've been leaching everybody in the past? I read a little about #7 but got lost in all the bla bla.

Odds are, if I had been able to find the soft #2 plastic white Nalgenes, I would have bought them and stuck with them. I understand the concerns come from the #7 hard types, and since the #2 is basically thick milk jug material, I would hope it is safe.

I didn't care too much in the past, and only did recently after someone said something to me about them. I realized I drink from them so much, and all of mine have sat in sun for so long on various summits, and been exposed to so much UV radiation, that it might be good to replace them. The steel bottles are nice, but I can see the drawback of them denting.

I like these although they are smaller in size, only 24oz.

If you don't want your old Nalgene bottles I'll take them. I can find a lot of uses for them, including carrying water.

I have one of the original narrow mouth ones from the 70's. I'm not sure it's a Nalgene, might be an IV bottle or it might be something I ordered from REI. But it still works fine after 40 years.

BPA is approved by the FDA... e.g. the government says it's safe.

Nonetheless, BPA-free containers use a substitute called BPS. Which is also approved by the FDA. And supposedly just as bad for you as BPA (which is to say perfectly fine).

Read all about it: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/01/1 ... 65214.html

Raises the question. Should you drink water straight from a creek, or filter it first using that BPA/BPS plastic filter/bag you carry with you. ](*,)

The gasoline container is safe, has a 2 on the bottom just like a milk jug.

@Widowmaker

I've never met a water bottle that isn't freezable. Leave some room in the top for the ice to expand otherwise it'll break.
