A heads up for anyone interested: this weekend the Tucson Symphony (including the present poster) is gonna be playing the most famous evocation of mountaineering in classical music, An Alpine Symphony
by Richard Strauss (who also wrote the famous theme music from 2001: A Space Odyssey.) It's a colossal and vivid depiction of an out-and-back hike in the Alps, and a tremendous undertaking for any orchestra. Thought it'd be worth mentioning here because it's a piece that over the years has really intensified my appreciation of the mountains and the natural world in general.
