Fortunately, he left a hand drawn map with instructions to family members to call for help if he had not contacted them by 6:00 p.m.

What a nasty place to get stuck. It looks like an uninjured person might be able to scramble out, but I wouldn't want to bet my life on it. I'm glad it turned out OK.
