2017 Fire Restrictions - Tonto Forest

Post by chumley »

Fire restrictions on the Tonto National Forest began Tuesday, May 23rd.

Current restrictions are "Stage 1". This means fires are still allowed in metal fire rings at developed campgrounds that have a camp host. Campfires are prohibited everywhere else. (If you're not sure, a good rule of thumb is if you aren't paying money for your camp site then you can't have a fire!)

Target shooting is prohibited forestwide, and smoking is restricted to your vehicle, building, or developed recreation site.

Do you know if there is a fire ring near the trailhead? Would that be okay to use with the restriction?

I don't think having a camp host present or not has anything to do with it. Plenty of those developed sites on the list do not have hosts.

@cactuscat
You're right. I mentioned it because it has been a guideline used by the Coconino NF in the past to help people understand what qualifies as a developed site or not.

See last year's CNF announcement here: https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/asnf/new ... EPRD505433
Under the restrictions, fires, campfires, charcoal, coal and wood stoves are allowed in developed campgrounds only, which are managed by concessionaires or have campground hosts.
As you pointed out, the Tonto order does not include that wording. For Tonto, stick with the list of approved campgrounds provided in the order.
