Total Eclipse of the sun, August 21

Post by azbackpackr »

I happen to live in the path of totality. I will be able to see it from my yard, or just walk down my dirt road to a field where there are fewer huge trees to get a better view.

I hear that the Oregon transportation department expects the roadways to resemble a giant parking lot during the event. The reason is that the path of totality is south of Portland and north of Eugene. (The path of totality goes through the state capital of Salem.) So, people in the two major population centers, the ones who didn't plan ahead, will be driving to try to see it at the last minute. This is not recommended!

Of course, other states will have the experience, including Wyoming, Nebraska, Kentucky and South Carolina.

Campgrounds and lodgings along the path of totality have been booked for months.

Or you could burn lots of fossil fuel and watch it with her LIVE and IN PERSON! :y:
Guests aboard the Royal Caribbean's Total Eclipse Cruise have an extra surprise in store for their once-in-a-lifetime viewing experience: Bonnie Tyler, the Welsh songstress of "Total Eclipse of the Heart" fame, will be on board to perform her 1983 hit just as the moon sails across the sun. (The cruise ship will be positioned in the path of totality for this critical moment. “Bonnie Tyler was a natural choice for this once-in-a-lifetime moment," said the president and CEO of Royal Caribbean International, Michael Bayley.)

If I went, I'd have to put up with a lot of crowds and traffic. So, I'm staying home. I have eclipse glasses. It'll be over 99% here. I'm 18 miles south of Cottage Grove. The problem with Oregon is there are so few north-south roads. Plus there is so much private property, you can't just stop and throw up a tent. It's going to be insane, seeing as the 5 already is insane.

If your at 99% I think it'd be well worth it to find some road to get you to 100%....it'll be a huge difference in what you experience.

I checked it out with maps, etc. I don't want to be stuck by the side of the road until Tuesday. Stuff happening right now in my life, also. Just want to stay home.

For sure, it was impossible to escape him. He died last September by the way, without much fanfare.

I wonder if I'll see much of the eclipse. I'm scheduled to be in meetings during most of it.

FYI, those pinhole cameras really work. All you really need is a piece of thin cardboard and a sheet of paper to project on.

This was my best shot. I was lucky to have some clouds float by in order to get a picture. When it was clear, it was impossible with just a plain camera like I have.

It was great! I don't know how to photograph eclipses, though. Looks like a blob in the photo. I was north of Corvallis, in a wide farming valley, with a view to the horizon. During totality I could see Venus and a couple of stars, and a satellite going by. The horizon was orange all around, like a sunset all around. It got very chilly suddenly. To try to beat the traffic, I drove away as soon as the sun peeped out again, and I was still cold and had to turn on the heater.

Traffic heading north at 5 a.m. on the 5 was fast. But afterward, I had to go south through Corvallis to get out of there. It wasn't bad in town, but the cross traffic heading for the 5 looked bad. So, I didn't take the 5 going back. I finally ran into bad traffic on 99W a few miles south of Corvallis. It took an hour to go 14 miles, and then most of them peeled off toward Eugene, and I kept going south.
