Woodbury Fire - Superstition Wilderness

Post by chumley » Jun 08 2019 8:27 pm

Burning near Woodbury Trailhead. It has grown to 500 acres. I'll post official links as soon as they're up.

The smoke plume does not look good.

I was watching the smoke from Peralta trail. The plane from Williams went out and back a few times.

I have yet to see an official incident website, but reports are that the fire has now reached 1000 acres.

The infrared imagery shows that it has moved up to Rogers Trough TH.
If you trace a line around all the hot spots on this map, the acreage is over 2000 acres, and photos from last night showed that the fire was split, or widely spread. This is obviously not near any homes or structures so it is not receiving the media attention that the Mountain Fire near Carefree is.

(red dots indicate active fire within the last 12 hours).

I just heard that it is expected to burn through Roger's Trough TH, and ??? where else. I hope they do all they can to protect Reavis Ranch.

@big_load I’ve read no official statement. However there has not been any lightning in the area in recent days.

at 4,000+ now but the fire detection looks like it's moving to the Southwest hopefully away from the eastern Supes forests.

@Sredfield
Hope it doesn't torch our Superstition Wilderness signs or our Reavis Canyon Trail sign...

Just got back from the public meeting with the incident command team on the Woodbury Fire. Here is what was covered;

Fire was 9,377 acres as 7pm last night. Still 0 percent contained, however, they did state there are a couple of areas that have held for a bit but they are not ready to call them contained yet. That is the area south of Rogers Trough by Montana Mountain and road 650. They also have it held south at 172/172A where the windmill is. The back burn at JF Ranch was successful with all structures there still standing including the corrals. There is some heat around the Roger's Trough area but nothing to horrible right now.

Now the bad news. It is continuing to move west and is nearing Red Tanks and the Dripping Springs area. Right now I think it's a pretty safe bet that the entire Fraser Canyon area will be lost. They are also trying to push the fire north (away from Gold Canyon). The fire right now is very close to Angel's Basin and Frog Tanks. Again, pretty safe bet those areas will burn. They dont want the fire to go past the Quarter Circle U ranch in Barkley Basin, again that would take out all of Fraser/Randolph Canyons.

They stated this is the first time a Type 1 team has been called to the Superstitions ever. The last fire in 1995 was commanded by a Type 2 team. They are using multiple helos to drop water and are trying to not use retardant if necessary to help preserve the desert. Weather for tomorrow calls for a high of 112 with 5% humidity and winds will be picking up tomorrow and Friday gusting up to 25mph. With the winds picking up smoke is expected to increase. No date for containment as of right now. They did say this is a prolific year for grass as they have never seen so much grass in the area ever before.

One thing to add, they did say that the fire is going to burn for AT LEAST a few more weeks minimum.

@mazatzal
Looks like a toss-up as to whether it got the one at Rogers Trough TH. So far it's looking like Reavis Ranch is out of the path, but way too close for comfort. It would be a huge shame to lose that.

Man this just makes my heart sink. Last time I was out there in May all I could think about was what a tinder box the entire place is lately with the abundance of tall dry grasses.

The below link is to a map that's frequently updated as to where the active portions of the fire are at the present.

On every trip into the Superstitions, I find another Gold Mine. Today the mine was filled with Memories. I can not wait for the next trip.

Is Peralta Rd. open or does the Forest Service have it shut down?

Yup shut down.

This thing appears to be burning strong to the north. Peter's Canyon next, also Bluff Springs and Miner's Needle Loops to the West. Unless we get some rain, I see this fire reaching hwy 88 at Fish Creek.
This is my gym. I have to travel down a bumpy road to get there. There are no treadmillls, no machines, and no personal trainers. I walk..I run..I breathe the fresh air. I can go any time I want, as much as I want and there is no membership fee.

Ugh, this is looking like it has the potential to take out the majority of the Supes. They will never be the same.
