Labor Day weekend in the Mormon Lake area? Hitch-hiking would be a fine option. Lake Mary Road will have plenty of traffic if you want to flash a little leg for passing pick-em-up trucks. Alternately, there are plenty of camping options there with people you can just walk up to and make friends. I'm sure you can find somebody who would be willing to shuttle you back. And if you haven't been, make sure to hit up the Mormon Lake Village Saloon. Quite the stop on a holiday weekend. Perfect for an after-hike drink!

you are telling a single girl to hitch hike? I'm more scared of that than a bear! I don't know... isn't that like not smart?

Probably not any less smart than going on a Tinder date. There are risks in everything we do. I was just throwing it out there as an option that isn't available on most other AZT segments.

Yes it is not smart but if you do, carry a half full plastic gasoline can. :M2C:

I've hitchhiked all over southern Utah with no problem, dirt roads a lot better for no nonsense rides than pavement but it works. Just don't get in if you get that "feeling". Or great conversation pieces " oh, I just got off from deployment with special forces" or, " gosh, this shoulder holster is so bulky " ( only good if its in winter time); or " My friend is just getting his car out of the shop and is meeting me at my vehicle" or whatever. All of my rides folks have been friendly, nice and really gone out of their way to help me.

so you obviously solo backpack? I have once .. one night... in the desert .. where are no bears. Bears scare me. Nothing else really does. Snakes scorpions Elk mountain lion coyote. Just bears. And being alone.

It's not for everyone, but I enjoy my solo hikes, backpacks, drives, etc. For me it's the freedom to move at my own pace, and if something draws me I go see it, or stop, or take a picture. If I want to camp early and read; I can. I had a partner at one time I enjoyed my trips with, but solo is really great for me. And if I decide to do something sort of crazy, I won't get anyone else in trouble!

I completed the Arizona Trail on single day hikes and since I was solo, to avoid the car problem I had to do the 8 to 10 miles in and then return. Walking a trail in the reverse direction really is different.

ugh! time is my concern. And... I know all about walking a trail in reverse direction... had to... realized I forgot shuttle keys 10 miles in... so yes. ty! So I'mma gonna solo 3 nights then hitch hike back to car. Don't worry my Osprey has built in whistle. I'll be fine... (I keep telling myself)

If you ever do happen to encounter a bear, I would recommend bear spray rather than blowing the whistle... when we encountered a bear ambling toward us last year, blowing my emergency whistle just changed its amble into a full-speed charge. Thankfully yelling at it while throwing a thick chunk of wood at it scared it off.

Not that it would help in this particular case, but did you get my PM regarding a backpacking partner? I sent one about a week ago.
