Re: Accident on Piestewa Peak
Is it just me, or does the Child look a bit big to be a toddler??? Must have been a good size Backpack!
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty & well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, totally worn out & proclaiming, "Wow What a Ride!"

Well, I for one am glad the child wasn't injured worse. Frankly, I think those baby carrier backpacks should be banned and using them is asking for heartbreak. That's something I would never carry a child in.

Re: Accident on Piestewa Peak
@rcorfman I see where you are coming from but from a parents perspective they are life savers. Having a harness gives my wife and I the ability to still hike with our 3 month old and even our 2 year old. We know our limits and maybe in this incident they didn’t know theirs..
Between my wife and I we’ve probably put over 1,000 miles of hiking with a baby in the harness and never had an incident. Just cause you have a baby shouldnt mean you can’t hike!

Re: Accident on Piestewa Peak
Best wishes to that mom and her little one for a speedy recovery so they can get back out on the trails soon. And kudos to mom for putting in the effort to get outdoors with her child. It’s not always easy to get the kiddos outside at those young ages. Those backpack carriers are actually awesome for getting outdoors with kids.
I had a great Kelty carrier when my kids were small, and even though we didn’t do a ton of hiking in those years, I think I put about 1000 miles on that carrier over the 4 years I used it. Luckily no accidents or incidents in that time, but there were more than a few occasions of diaper blowouts and spit-up in my hair and down my back.

Stop crying and just go do the hike.

Society: "When you're not willing to risk the unusual, then you have to settle for the ordinary. "
Also Society: "Why did you do that? You need to be more careful. That was stupid...."
I would rather see people hike with the toddlers/children then to have them indoors staring at a screen in a "safe" and boring environment. Kids that don't get out of the house and don't get hurt turn into wimpy adults who become anxious, depressed, and struggle with their weight. You know it's true.

Filed under the heading of "falling is bad". I hope they both recover with no lasting ill effects.

@LindaAnn
I'm really shocked at the tone of ban the child carriers in this topic.
Your expression, diaper blowouts, made me smile.
