FR 41/FR 37: New River Mountain HP

Post by Jim »

Judging by what I could find, virtually no one visits the New River Mountain's High point. Looks like the inactive member, ASUAviator, did 5 years ago, but he seems to have used an ATV on extremely rough road. Does anyone have experience out there?

I found a low utility trip report on peakbagger that reads something like: New Water Mesa Rd to FR 41 to FR 37, then a 3mile hike.

Anyone else done the high point for the New Water Mountains? Great views, out there!

How was the road access?

@Jim_H The high point of the New River Mountains might be Squaw Mountain. If I remember correctly you take seven springs rd to fr 41, which will then take you to fr 37. Up until that point my 2wd frontier did fine.it was dry though. There was some serious ups and downs so if wet definitely need AWD or 4x4. I can’t speak about fr 37 but I believe Oregon_Hiker took fr 37 to the upper ranch and may know about road conditions.

Actually Squaw Mountain is not the high point my mistake. It’s elevation looks like it’s 5905 and The highest point in the New River Mountains is 5936?

I've looked at that area forever, but never though I had a vehicle capable of that drive.

@FLYING_FLIVER was out there in 2018 and reported on the drive.

Anybody who gains the truckquadboatchickopelli can do it!

I've also pondered that area (there's gotta be some ancient stuff up there). I've picked around the edges (from the north and east) but it's a long way to the high point. Cook's Mesa is big! ASU Aviator's route using a quad made a lot of sense or, as I suggested at the time, a Topohiker-type 30mi walk.

I'm pretty sure I can see the high point from my house in South Phoenix. I like that I can see a point where if I was standing on top of it I could see both my house, and the San Francisco Peaks. I'm going to have to get up there at some point.

@Jim_H Browns usually works for that. And the Bradshaw peaks, Lane, maybe Towers too?

The closest I've been to it is the 4234' peak in the section 2 just west of section 1 where it is. I planted a geocache there and really eyed that peak, thinking it really deserved a cache too. At the time, I had a dirt bike I rode out from Moore's Gulch off of Table Mesa Road. I've also been SSW of it at the Bilby Benchmark in section 23.

Canceled, unless I have access to a better ride.
[ New River Mtns Hi Pt 5936 ]

Found some YouTube videos that show road conditions. Looks like ranging from 2012 to 2019. Lots of good road, but a few spots where there is not way I can cross at the river, and some rough washed out sections. Barret wrote a description in 2012 that reports rough roads requiring 4 Low.

That sounds like a mental game I play, in which I try to guess what can and can't be seen from someplace where I'm not currently located, and also whether people at any two given locations could see each other. It drives my wife crazy when I try to explain it.
